Forget all the Dracula jokes you've heard for a moment. For most Romanians, Transylvania is a ski resort in the winter and a place to escape the oppressive heat in the summer. It is dotted with picturesque towns and villages. One of the most picturesque is SIbiu a medieval town with charming scenery and entertaining piatas.
There are multiple hotels in town that meet traditional Western standards but the Hilton is by far the most luxurious. Having traveled extensively around Romania, I can say that this is the most luxurious hotel I have found outside of Bucharest and having visited both properties this hotel is in many ways grander than its counterpart in Bucharest the Hilton Athenee Palace.
Throughout my stay I received friendly and dedicated service particularly from Luminita at Guest Relations but also from other members of the hotel staff.
At well under 100 Euros per night I found the hotel to offer excellent value at the weekends. The hotel thoroughly justified it's TripAdvisor status as one of the 10 best hotels in Romania. Details of my stay follow:
I stayed two weekend nights and was upgraded to one of the hotel's suites. The hotel is located on the outskirts of the city center. It is a 5-10 minute taxi ride to access most basic services like banks and pharmacies and to most major tourist attractions like the Piata Mare (Big Square). The location may be off-putting to some guests who want to be in "the center of the action" but it is picturesque and there little traffic noise at night. Taxis are cheap and the hotel works with 924 taxis (a local company), which generally means guests will receive problem free service.
My room was very spacious with a large sitting area, two small balconies, a powder room, and a full bath with separate shower cabin and bathtub. Rooms are decorated in a classical style with a red and cream colour scheme accented by dark wood furniture and cream coloured marble baths. My room was spotlessly clean and housekeeping services were prompt and responsive to requests.
Hotel staff were friendly, helpful, and multilingual and professional arrange transfers and other activities. Staff remembered my name, asked about my day, etc. As I mentioned Luminita was particularly helpful and dedicated and seemed to take a genuine interest to ensure my stay was problem free. Thank you.
The rooms contained a proper, ergonometric work chair and internet signal was universally strong throughout my stay. Water pressure was only mediocre but I am sure is consistent with the area.
No hotel is perfect and I will outline a few, small problems I had during my stay but they did not impact the overall quality of my stay nor do they cause me any hesitation in recommending this hotel.
Problem One-The Quality of the Food: I tried room service as well as the food from the Diamond Lounge and it simply does not match the quality I would expect from this level of hotel. Room service is below average and overpriced. Selection particularly throughout the day in the Diamond lounge were little more than breakfast items cut up and repackaged, which meant they were stale and unappealing. The lounge did provide a nice selection of chilled juices and mineral water. Given the number of excellent restaurants in Sibiu, I would advise guests to eat out.
Problem Two-Room Temperature: Even with the heating system turned completely off my room reached 25 degrees C (77.2 degrees F) that is very warm particularly in April. At checkout, I heard another guest complaining about this as well. I was able to open the door to my balcony but that was not a sufficient solution. The hotel must examine there heating system to ensure greater guest control of the temperature in their room.
Problem Three-Tobacco Smoke: This is a common problem in many hotels around Romania and Central and Eastern Europe generally. I was given a non-smoking suite but across the hall and next to me were smoking rooms, which meant that I constantly smelled cigarette smoke in my room. The hotel should probably do a better job of separating smoking and non-smoking rooms for guest comfort. I suspect they wanted to group the suites together. Standard rooms may have better separation between smoking and non-smoking rooms.
Overall I was very pleased with my stay and feel this hotel is an excellent choice in Romania.
