“Very happy with this hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2010

Couldn't have been happier with our first hotel expereince in Bulgaria. Got off the overnight train from Istanbul, walked 500m down the main street from the train station and there was the Leipzig. We had only booked the night before but were given a warm wlecome, early check in (10.30am) and a huge room with views towards the city.

The hotel has had a makeover and it's really very modern and comfortable. Good beds and furnishings (if a little bright in its colour combos), cable TV with English language channels and a nice clean bathroom. The plumbing was brand new but quite frankly, the shower/bath combo was hopeless and water gushed out each time we showered. Luckily there was adrainin the bathroom and lots of spare towels. It was a bit of a logistical challenge but couldn't take the shine of this great hotel.

Breakfast in the dining room was very generous but a warning to anyone who likes tea in the morning - bring your own tea bags. The only tea supplied is black fruit tea (eg: blackberry). Otherwise, plenty of variety.

A friend, native of Plovdiv, booked it for us. After several disappointing hotels elsewhere in Eastern Europe, this one was a pleasant surprise.

Modern, very spacious room; large bathroom with audio-connect and window with draw-blinds allowed viewing of TV from the tub! Mini-fridge, a/c, great view from room.

Very good breakfast buffet. Nice, comfortable lobby area with tasty cake selections and full bar opens to street for 'airiness'.

Friendly, helpful staff.

Convenient - short walk (two minutes) to Plovdiv's highest hill and only 5 minutes to the main center with it's shopping squre, mosque and Roman amphitheater ruins. Main bus station (with access to Sofia, and to Sunny Beach on Black Sea) only 5 minutes away by taxi. New shopping mall being constructed across street from hotel.

We've just returned from our trip in Plovdiv with very good memories. Very pleased with our choice to stay in this hotel. We had a room in the renovated part,so everything was new and comfortable. The staff is very polite. Breakfast is good, not great variety.
The hotel is surrounded by green- the Ruski bld, the Bounardzika hill, the City park is very near, too.
We believe that in the near future after renovation is completed (at thepresent prices) the hotel wil be something like a hidden gem.

I had a local book the hotel for me, though she had never been inside the hotel.

I visit Plovdiv 7-9 times a year, and am always trying different places to stay.

This hotel is undergoing renovation, and I had one of the old rooms. Most home closets would have been bigger than my room, and the entire bathroom was not more than 12 sq ft (1.2 sq m).

The rubbish collector probably discarded the bed, furniture and amenities. OK, not quite that bad, BUT you get the picture. For a backpacker on an extreme budget, I would still pass.

Breakfast was barely passable. Juice was so watered down I wasn't sure it was juice.

After seeing the hotel desk, you should already be aware of what to expect after you pay for your room. Personnel were very nice, as is typical of Plovdiv in general, but the hotel shabbiness shows through.

I met a business friend for a drink in the second floor bar. There was a small function going on in another room off the bar. The guests there sent their children out of that room to go and play in the bar area. These kids were so noisy and running around that no one could hear anything. The hotel staff would not tell the kids to be quiet.

Consider it a 1 star hotel, at best.

Moved our conversation over to Happy Bar and Grill. They are all over Sofia and Plovdiv. Great place to eat for Bar and Grill food. Reasonable prices, cold beer, great service and waitresses with the shortest skirts in Europe (not sexy just short). Your mother would approve as would your wife/husband.

I travel 100,000 miles a year and have stayed in many off the beaten path hotels, but this ranks as one of the worst experiences.

Nice location, not far from the City Center. Nice area to walk around. Plovdiv is a great city for a few days vacation.

Plovdiv has a number of small great cafes, restaurants, pubs and coffee houses. So go exploring, and enjoy.

After one night, I quickly moved to the Dalfi Hotel in Old Town. It was a nice hotel with so so staff, a bit pricey and in Euros (not Lev). Then moved to Ego Hotel. Have made this my "home" when in Plovdiv ever since then. Just down Ruski Blvd, about 1 km.

  • Liked — Location is nice. Ruski Blvd is busy, but a 10-15 minute walk to City Center
  • Disliked — Everything else

This was our fourth stay at the hotel. We really like the old fashioned ambience there. The dinner menu in the dining room is excellent even historic! There is also live music some nights. Breakfast is very good with as much as you can eat from the buffet. True, most of the staff don't speak english but they make up for their lack of this by being both friendly and helpful. All in all a very relaxing place to stay.
We would definitely recommend this hotel but one word of warning, if you come in by air watch out for RIP OFF taxi fayres from the airport into town! Agree the price before you climb into the cab.

We stayed at Hotel Leipzig during our travels around Bulgaria. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our fridge didn't work and I wanted cold juice for the next morning, no problem, it went into the bar fridge and was ready at 6am!

Our room was an old one, meaning not a refurbished one. It was a bit tired looking but it was clean, quiet, pleanty of hot water and after all, we only slept in it!

It's an easy walk into the downtown area of Plovdiv for daytime sightsseeing and shops, and evening dinner etc.

There are lots of really nice places to eat in the streets around the hotel. There are a couple of nightclubs too if you want them, we didn't! Towards the centre, there are great street cafes to sit in and watch the world go by. Tip: ladies take your own loo paper!!

We left very early to get a train and the hotel packed breakfast for us which was really good of them and unexpected!

As backpackers, the best thing about this hotel for my family was the close proximity to the train station and bus station, it was an easy walk to them, and when we arrived, this hotel was so easy to find too.

I would stay there again.
