Just stayed there. Rooms and everything is very polished, shining and working. The room was comfortable and relatively quiet (taking into account that the hotel is near a very busy avenue, I think it actually is the very center of the city). Breakfast was quite ok, except for the scrambled eggs - which were overdone and terrible (but maybe that's the Ukrainian way of preparing them).

One minor glitch was that the room I was given was smelling of cigarettes. Thinking that someone from the local office (which made the reservation) just forgot to mention that I want a non-smoking room I went to the reception to change it. There, they very politely told me they don't have a distinction between smoking an non-smoking, they have just rooms. However, they did change the room to another, which didn't smell - probably was less smoked in.

So I tell this story rather as a local curiosity, not a downside of this particular hotel.

New, spotless, right in the center of town. Helpful beyond any hotel we have stayed at. Very good food and service in the restraunts. The opera house and major museums are just across the street.

I stayed here is August 2006 and based my choice on a Lonely Planet review and the hotel website. I booked over the phone for 3 days but voluntarily sent them an e-mail to confirm it. Their reply to this was that....oh dear...we only have a double room for 2 nights but that I could have a deluxe suite for the 3rd night and I could pay the difference. Ooops.
The hotel itself is very central, right by the Opera House (quelle surprise) with a large, highly polished foyer devoid of furniture or atmosphere. The staff were courteous and helpful and spoke good English. The room was first class - clean and quiet. Breakfast was wonderful (included in the price of around 50 pounds / night) with international as well as local fare. One evening I booked room service from the hotel restaurant menu and it was one of the best meals I have ever had in my life - all for around a tenner. The only strange thing (or maybe it's normal in 5* hotels) was that the waiter brought each course separately so I was forever getting up and down to open the door.
Go to L' viv now - it's the new Prague ! Just a 40 minute flight from Warsaw on LOT.

Here is the website for this new hotel: [--------------------]
Just got back from a wonderful stay in Ukraine together with my wife and two teenage daughters; stayed at the brand new Hotel Opera located in the heart of the city on Prospect Svobody directly across from the Lviv Opera Theatre. The hotel is a lovely 50 something room boutique; the service is impeccable; although we spoke Ukrainian, we did note that a lot of the staff was fluent in several languages, including German and English. The hotel is tastefully decorated, has mini bars, wonderful showers and internet access. There is a restaurant which serves a great breakfast buffet (they will make omelets for you if you ask); also serves a wonderful dinner; it has a pretty ambtious menu--we stuck to the traditional dishes--try the pork with mushroon sauce and have them add sauerkraut and potatoes village style ("kartoplia po seliansky"); smoking is still a major nuisance in Ukraine and smoke does waft through the restaurant as there is no segregated "no smoking" section. Also, don't know how they handle "non smoking" rooms or whther they even exist. But right now there was no problem in the hotel room itself. The place is very reasonably prices at about $150 US per night including breakfast. The coffee was great. They will get taxis for you. This would be a nice hotel in any city and is especially welcome in Lviv after years of less than comfotable accommodations.
