Owner description: St. Michael's fortress is situated on a hill, 70 m above sea level. White trimmed stone was used for its construction, which lasted from the 15th up to the 17th century. It covers about 2600 m2. During archaeological excavations, architectural remains and plenty of culture-historical artefacts from the times of the Venetian rule were found, but also the rests of the material culture from the Iron Age, which proves that the Croats built the fortress on the site of an ancient Illyrian town.

“Look at Sibenik from an eagle nest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

I spent a couple of days in Sibenik, a marvelous town on the Dalmatian coast, in a room belonging to Bed & Breakfast Knoba, that I warmly recommend. Although Sibenik has many interesting ancient buildings, a pretty Renaissance garden and a pleasant beach, the two highlights of my visit were the cathedral (see review) and St Michel's Fortress - also called St. Ana Fortress -, mainly due to the wonderful views it offers.

Tip for Sibenik: If you are going to stay in the old city, learn about the exact place beforehand, because cars can't get into that area and it is built on a steep hill, with lots of steps. If you know, you can decide how to reach your accommodation best.

Tip for the fortress: Put on comfortable shoes and a hat and take some water, because it's a long, steep way up to the fortress.

“Lovely views from the top of the Fortress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

Climb the hill all the way up to the top and see a beautiful vista, from the seaside on one part of the hill, to the newer town on the other.

“Great views over the city and of the islands”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We liked the views over the city and out to sea but would have liked a bit more information about the fortress. Although saying that there was work going on to show the 9th and 10th century parts. I feel more information about the history would have made the visit but that maybe something that will happen in the future

“Good observation point”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

It's one of the best preseved fortresses in Croatia. As usual there's not much to see inside, but the views over Sibenik, the Cathedral, harbour are magnificent. The fortress is probably the only observation point to have a good view of the Cathedral, as it's squeezed between buildings and you can't get a proper view of it being on the same level with it.
