We travelled through the park having spent most of the day on the beach. We had pre-arranged to stay at Ramica Dvori, a mountain lodge about 2 hours walk from the entrance to the park, and started walking about 5pm, after the days heat had subsided.
The walk is mildly strenuous, and was completed by all of us (wife plus 3 kids (11,16,18)) without difficulty in basic trainers. If you were going any further than Ramica Dvori, I agree that good walking boots would be needed, but up to that point, they are definitely not.
Our evening at this mountain lodge was fantastic. The basic food, served under the trees, was incredibly tasty, and the free schnapps went down a little too well. The offspring played boule, and went to see the pack donkey and mule that brought up all the supplies. We sat and talked to a few other travellers, and felt we had the whole of the mountains to ourselves. After a restful sleep we had a hearty breakfast (eggs, bacon, bread) and started our walk down, getting to our car again by mid day. And for this beautiful family time together, and the experience it gave our children, we had to pay roughly 140 euros. It was the best night of our holiday. It made our holiday. I highly recommend it.
