There are few proper restaurant choices in the old town of Zadar, but Konoba Trata makes up for that. It's only steps away from the remains of the Zadar forum, on Ulica Jerolima Vidulica, but as so often happens in Croatia, the street can be hard to spot. Check the map first, and then walk around to the back of the forum/church complex to find Ulica Jerolima Vidulica. Follow it for some 50m (150 ft) and you should see a sign for Konoba Trata, and a door in the wall.
The restaurant is located inside a secluded courtyard, with fewer than a dozen tables and plenty of separation for reasonable privacy and quiet. The kitchen is inside the building, however.
The menu is very much fish-focused, and the fish is generally priced by weight. We both selected grilled seabass (a Class I fish on the menu), and side dishes of rice and of potatoes with chard. As you can see by the photo, the main courses is exactly the grilled fish, with only some extra virgin olive oil, so make sure to select and order the side dishes you want.
Both the fish, grilled whole, and the sides were excellent in flavour, and the atmosphere of the courtyard was very pleasant. However, the meal was not inexpensive on the Croatian scale, as our total for two fish (0.35 kg each), two sides and a litre of mineral water came to 300 HRK. That's EUR 40 or US$50 so still quite reasonable on that scale, though.
If you are looking for a nice place for a dinner in the old town of Zadar, Konoba Trata is an excellent choice.
