“Lovely rooms and interior design but a few negatives”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

We stayed four nights at this hotel at the end of a ten night trip to Croatia. A lot of money has been spent on interior and exterior design which is fantastic but focus is now needed on aspects like food. We took the half board option which meant we had to eat in the buffet restaurant. The quality of food did not match the feel of the hotel - the juice at breakfast was like watered down squash (we complained) and the croissants although freshly baked were stodgy. The last night we went out as we couldn't face the food again. We would also urge the hotel to ban smoking - we wanted to eat outside but were put off because of the smoke.
The indoor swimming pool (which is stunning) is advertised as being heated but it was freezing cold. I asked whether it could be heated and was told that is wasn't heated in the summer. My son did enjoy the outdoor pool though - but we did get annoyed at people (including Brits) reserving sun beds for hours when they weren't using them! Lastly, we chose the hotel because of the tennis facilities but didn't know there would be a charge which was a bit annoying as the hotel is fairly expensive.

Room Tip: We had a nice room overlooking the sea

Poolside and terrace views excellent.
Breakfast excellent (if young lad is making omelettes to order). Dinner OK.
Agree with comments on staff, lady in pool canteen very friendly but she seems to do the work of 3 people.
Entertainment was good but seemed very sombre.
Rooms spacious but I had a room at the front of the hotel above a bar. Which was fine for most nights of the holiday because only the odd person would sit out late and have a drink. One night the hotel must have had a massive function (Think it was a wedding) and there were over a hundred people outside at this bar making an enormous amount of noise and this went all night. At 2.30 I went to complain at the Reception but he kept thanking me for being patient!!! I was informed it may stop in a couple of hours!!! I slept the night with a pillow over my head and could still hear the noise. (I wasn't impressed). If the hotel had stopped selling drinks at a certain hour they would have gone home.

I thought the hotel when allocating rooms would know they had a function on so why place a lady with two children in this room (totally unbelievable!!!).

Besides this incident had a great holiday - loved Croatia.

Room Tip: Sea view away from front car park and away from front bar.

The overall hotel looks pretty nice and stylish. The location itself its wonderful: great sea-view form the room and nice, rocky beaches in the surroundings.
The restaurant is quite big and offer standard Croatian-Italian food. Good, but not extraordinary - so we eat most of the time in the restaurants in the city centre of Pula.
The facilities in the hotel are up to 4 star.
The pool is quite big but unfortunately the water is not heated. The wellness centre was awesome, friendly and professional stuff- free saunas, treatments that exceeded our expectations- excellent! The terrace of the bar is a great place for an after-dinner drink with most of the time live music.
At the end, we were satisfied for choosing this hotel and will probably come back next year.

Lobby, public areas are lovely. Modern and mainly clean. Reception great, very helpful and good English speaking. Location about 10 mins in taxi to Pula, about 20 mins from airport. The roads are great for driving on, brilliant signs. A toll road if you go further north.

Pool nice but small. Seafront yacht club nice but small again. Nowhere near enough sunbeds or shades. The sunbeds are nice and great quality though if you are lucky enough to get one. You have to pay for the beds on the seafront. There is a roped area for swimming in the sea. My son hired a canoe. Also walked down the resort and hired a jet ski for half an hour.

Food in yacht club takes forever. Drinks everywhere in hotel takes forever. To be fair almost everywhere we went around Istria was really slow and not attentive. Pula town was slightly better service in bars and restaurants.

Rooms are lovely, very comfy beds, quiet, plenty of room, nice balcony, good bathroom, AC works well, clean. Room service will wake you up unless you have your 'do not disturb' sign on. They might do that even with the sign though!

We were half board. Breakfast was pretty much the same every day. If you were later they wouldn't replenish items. This was the same in the evening. We ate there twice in the evening, it was really dull buffet food. Very boring! Also the environment was very canteen. Not my cup of tea.

The area around the hotel has a supermarket, a handful of bars and a couple of places to eat. Nowhere was expensive to eat, drinks were cheap out and about. We thought the best place was on the way out of the complex, near security. I think it was called Day & Night. Nice evening atmosphere, service better, nice enough food-if basic. There is a cafe/bar just next door with a pool and 'entertainment' if that's your bag and loungers that you can hire. We only went at night.

We popped too the marina and there wasn't anything going off. We were glad to get out and about to other different places. The ampitheatre in Pula was fab to visit. We stumbled upon a cute castle ruin on the way to Rovinj, which was lovely-wish we had gione there to stay!

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet sea view, was more of a side sea view but was fine. There is sometimes entertai...

Dear derbyshirehigham,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of Park Plaza Histria on Tripadvisor. We are pleased to hear that you found the hotel modern and clean, that you enjoyed the hotel rooms and that your son had fun boating in the sea.
We regret, however, that the meals did not reach your expectations. Please know that we constantly evaluate the menu in our effort to provide a variety of quality food items.
As per the sun bed issue, please let us inform you that our staff already solved the problem by increasing the number of sun beds and by ensuring that no one is leaving the sun beds empty all day.
We hope that you will give us another chance to serve you in Park Plaza Histria or in any other Park Plaza hotel that would better suit your needs

Nice rooms and good location are let down by the catering, which retains strong hints of communist era cuisine, service and opening hours. Staff varied from the good to the rather rude, leaving an overall average impression that is inconsistent with the international prices demanded.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

I booked our holiday to Croatia a week before the trip - despite several weeks of researching the 'perfect' destination. We wanted sunshine, a quality hotel in a country that would give us plenty of things to do while avoiding kids club destinations as teachers looking to escape for a week!
The Thomson's package from Manchester to Pula came up in a search staying at the Hotel Histria for a week. I'd never normally book a package holiday and never book half board liking the freedom to explore - however, the minimal additional cost of booking HB made it a no brainer to book We had an absolutely brilliant week and will definitely return to Croatia.
The plus points:
- really well rennovated hotel - large bedrooms, great view from the balcony
- quiet surroundings but part of a larger complex that offered supermarket, shops, sports facilities
- the yacht club was a great place to relax / sunbathe and swim in the sea helping you to feel a million miles away from home
- excellent local restaurant you should definitely visit - 5 minute walk from the hotel through the harbour and called Ribarske koliba Fischerhutte. One of the best steaks I've had and great seafood
- Car hire companies in the complex and about £40 to hire a car for the day all in - well worth it to get out and about to explore Fasana, Rovinj and find quiet beaches
- Flight time from Manchester only a couple of hours
- Brilliant local wine - generally everything was really, really cheap including drinks in the hotel
- Venice well worth the day trip and the hotel organised the tickets for us
- Really nice mix of couples / families and think the hotel is suitable for either

Minor gripes
- facilities description made it sound that tennis was included. This actually cost 120 kunas (about £12) each time you played. Apparently in 2013 it will be included - felt a little misleading
- agree with what everyone else says about sun beds being taken by 9am and then lying empty all day. We never lay by the pool - and to be honest there's nicer places ie the Yacht club
- Food was plentiful - however did feel there was a slight lack of fresh fruit and veg.
- asked hotel staff about hiring a boat - you certainly get boat envy in Croatia, the country is made for being on the water. We didn't want to do a few hundred people trip and wanted to charter a boat with a skipper or hire a small boat ourselves. There didn't seem to be any options and even walking through the marina ourselves couldn't find anything. On the last day we saw Hotel Brioni around the coast had a small boat for hire - annoyingly too late as we were off home the following day

Overall we had a brilliant week which was over too soon. Would love to try Dubrovnik / Split and the islands as I've fallen in love with Croatia and everything that is has to offer. Lovely people, stunning coastlines and great wine!
