This is the gate to the old City where the local buses and cruise coaches come in, so it does get very busy.
Just outside, there are cafes and bars, souvenir shops and tourist info, plus it's where the leaders of the guided walking tours and kayaking expeditions stand, touting for business. The entrance looks great by night, lit up, and the lower area to its left has a small children's playground, which is also well lit at night. Once inside the gate, the whole of Old Dubrovnik main street opens out before you. To your right is Onofrio's fountain, meeting point for the tours, plus tourist info, shops, ticket office for the Wall walk and public loos (Tip - always have small change for the toilets. Either there's someone outside waiting to let you in, or there's a slot in the door. Price is generally about 7 kuna). Inside the Pile Gate to your left is the flight of steep stone steps up to the Wall walk. Just along on the left is the entrance to the Pharmacy Museum and interestingly a small stone attached to the wall of a building which young local men appear to try to climb on and take off their shirts! We watched this in amazement for some time. No-one succeeded! I think you would not stay very long at the Pile Gate. Better to walk through and into the magic that is Old Dubrovnik.
