“Busy, busy, busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

This is the gate to the old City where the local buses and cruise coaches come in, so it does get very busy.

Just outside, there are cafes and bars, souvenir shops and tourist info, plus it's where the leaders of the guided walking tours and kayaking expeditions stand, touting for business. The entrance looks great by night, lit up, and the lower area to its left has a small children's playground, which is also well lit at night. Once inside the gate, the whole of Old Dubrovnik main street opens out before you. To your right is Onofrio's fountain, meeting point for the tours, plus tourist info, shops, ticket office for the Wall walk and public loos (Tip - always have small change for the toilets. Either there's someone outside waiting to let you in, or there's a slot in the door. Price is generally about 7 kuna). Inside the Pile Gate to your left is the flight of steep stone steps up to the Wall walk. Just along on the left is the entrance to the Pharmacy Museum and interestingly a small stone attached to the wall of a building which young local men appear to try to climb on and take off their shirts! We watched this in amazement for some time. No-one succeeded! I think you would not stay very long at the Pile Gate. Better to walk through and into the magic that is Old Dubrovnik.

“Crowded”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

Too many tour buses let off passengers here so the Gate area is always too crowded. Seek out the other two gates to the Old Town. The gate by Revlin is easier to navigate and houses a nice, small archaeology museum.

“A must visit when in Croatia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

Let me get it out of the way the Old Town is busyy! That said there is a reason for it because it is awesome. You can close your eyes and transport yourself back in time to theperiod Roman Emperors ruled the world. This jewel was nearly destroyed in the recent war were 2000 shells rained down on the old town while the world watched in horror. Thankfully the buildings have been lovingly restored. Now thousands of tourists visit and in peak season you will find it an effort to walk in the narrow passages. We still found it busy in September but it was tolerable. Apart from the architecture and history there are dozens of reataurants with endless choices of cuisines at inflated prices, but hey, you will be enjoying food in this spectacular setting and how priceless is that? You may find live music at some bars and the musicians are excellent but expect to pay the price for drinks at the venue. There are two bars right on the edge of the rocks where you can enjoy the spectacular views. The experience is expensive but really priceless - you will never forget sipping a drink watching the Adriatic and being aware that an ancient civilisation once lived there. For the photographer - just point your expensive camera anywhere if it looks good and snap - and you have a work of art.

“Cant miss this landmark”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

"Can't miss" in the sense that it's really quite central, and one of the most important ways of getting into the old town. And also "can't miss" in the sense that you have to go see it! It's quite impressive.

“Busy but well organised”

Divided by rope for entrance/exit during busy times. Good meeting place and buses run from just outside. Bars etc, toilets nearby
