Its the main entrance to oldcity which you can not miss.But it doesnt has a huge effect on people in my opinion.
Not as clean as the other parts we visited as the water seemed to be a dumping ground where the Kayak school were based which was a shame. However once past the gate there are chemists, more traditional croatian bakeries etc and just further a hotel (dont recall the name)
The old city of Dubrovnik only has three entrances and the Pile Gate is the impressive main land gate. You cross the drawbridge and take the ramp down into the city just like a knight in the middle ages. The high walls and narrow sloping pathway are great examples of defensive architecture. It can get very crowded in the high season and slippery in the rain.
Another wonderful meeting place that is full of great photo opportunities. Check out the Elvis impersonator that performs at the restaurant adjacent to the gate.
Such a narrow gateway to such a wonderful city. Outside you're in the 21st century, cross the drawbridge and you're plunged into the medieval fortress. It's a great experience, although it can get very congested in the height of the season.
