“Small but original.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

You have to pay a small entrance fee.Not very spacious inside but probably for the small old city population satisfied with the volume.

“Fascinating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We were very pleased that we visited this, the second oldest Synagogue in Europe. It seems such a shame that it is no longer used for services due to lack of a Rabbi (and congregation). The museum housed in the same building is also very interesting. Worth a visit if you are interested in history.

“So sad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

A beautiful old-style synagogue. How sad that there are no longer enough people (enough men!) to make it an active congregation. Beautiful, though, and with lovely relics of the old days when Dubrovnik did have an active Jewish community.

“Rude Behaviour”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

On Friday September 28th 2012, we, a group of six Israelis tried to visit the synagogue. At the entrance we encountered one of the rudest persons one could meet in such a sacred place. He demanded an exact change from all of us (3 Euros each or its equivalence in local currency). When we started searching for the money in our pockets or purses and realized that we may not be able to meet his uncompromising demand, he shouted that we should go to the bank. This event took place in the afternoon and undoubtedly he could have given us the needed change if he was willing to do so. Moreover, before even finishing our pursuit (we thought that perhaps we could have come up with the right amount of money after all) he started yelling at us to get away. We have no idea what triggered his insolent behavior, as till that moment while bewildered and amazed, we were very polite. We told him that we are Jews and that it was very important for us to visit the synagogue. But in no avail. At this point it became very ugly and he even tried to shove us down the stairs. When we told him that we will call the police he yelled: “I am the police”. At that moment we decided to leave the place. We could not bury our embarrassment and the humiliation that we felt in front of our local (non-Jewish guide) who witnessed the whole incident. In case one wonders, we are not some young punks looking for trouble. All members of our group are adults, university graduates consisting of three educators, an engineer, a university professor, and a lawyer.
We are writing this note out of concern for future visitors of the Dubrovnik Synagogue. It is not only to do with us. We think that one wrong type of a person, like this gatekeeper, could do more damage particularly to this jewel of a synagogue, and more importantly, to all Jews in general. It seem imperative that whoever is in charge of the synagogue, either provide this men with proper training in basic human behavior, or remove him from, apparently a very important job.
