“Escape the crowds in Dubrovnik!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

Take the 15 minute ferry ride out of the harbour and enter a different world from the madness of the 'old town'. We balked at paying the steep price to walk the city wall, and enjoyed the walking circuit on the island, taking time to swim and enjoy views of the city that others do not get to see. The peacocks are great fun as are the wild, (very tame), rabbits. The visitors centre/shop is poor, but there is a nice little bar by the harbour. Other than that just enjoy the peaceful landscpe and the swimming in the clear blue waters!

“Very Nice Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

Lokrum is a nice retreat from the crowds in Dubrovnik. It is only a short 15 minute ferry ride from the old port. The island is full of trees and vegetation offering shade and surrounds you in nature; a nice contrast to stone-filled Dubrovnik.

Lokrum is full of well maintained trails and some interesting sights. There are many areas you could stop and take a swim in the summer.

Overall, it is well worth the time and price to visit this beautiful island as a nice retreat during a busy vacation.

That iceland is so beautiful. Take a city boat from the harbour 2-3€ and have a nice day. You could swim there at the "blue lagoon".
There are also good restaurant to have a lunch. Very nice place.

“Could be nice but needs attention”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

Lokrum could be an idyllic island, but unfortunately it just seems to have been abandoned.
If you get the half-hourly ferry from Dubrovnik old town the tickets cost about 60KN return per person, and this includes access to the island - if you arrive by other means then you have to pay an extra fee on the island.
It's billed as a peaceful and beautiful retreat but we found it to be neither. Possibly we had bad luck as the central part of the island was taken over with hundreds of kids playing sports, so peaceful it was not! There is also a lot of maintenance detritus everywhere on the island and it's more wild than tended, so it just looks a bit of a mess. The paths are very rough and you will need sturdy shoes especially to get to the highest points of the island, which frankly began to become more like rock climbing than walking.
There is a salt lake which is apparently a favourite bathing spot, but didn't look too likely, and apart from this there are no beaches on Lokrum, just rocky coves - the largest and most sheltered of which is reserved for nudists.
There are plenty of much nicer islands to spend time on so give Lokrum a miss unless you are particularly into hiking!

“Peaceful green haven without too many tourists - beautiful spot to swim off the flat rocks and varied attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

The clear sea full of fish and very pleasant to swim in (no changing screens as at other beaches tho)
Too many peacocks and botanical gardens had little to see in Oct - apart from flowering cacti - probably fine in spring
