Hotel villas kolocep

As a hotel in the middle of an average city or in some boring, unpicturesque country then ok the hotel really is just a 3 star pleasant stay. However, set on the beautiful island of kolocep, with breath taking views, it's own small beach just in front of the pool and a modern, trendy bar set up high to really make the most of the scenery, hotel villas kolocep really was a lovely stay. Being the only hotel on the island it has no rivals and has picked the most gorgeous location on this small island. Few things to consider: the hotel only offers half board so you don't have a choice but to eat their food. Allow in your budget some dinners out though as the food for us was usually luke warm, bland and to be honest quite horrible. The omelette station at breakfast and pasta station at dinner was a lovely touch though, and I would go here everyday of the stay! The villas are well kept, and our room was very spacious. Do pay a little extra for a sea view, we saw the back end of another villa and it was such a shame. The pool is clean and again, sunbathing with that view is priceless.
Top tips:
Stay away from the fruit juice.
Grab a sunbed early, there aren't enough!
Get a sea view for your villa
Have a drink each evening in their 'four elements' bar. It's gorgeous.
They offer A la Carte at dinner if you book at reception. Not advertised at all but a lovely alternative to help yourself.

We heard rumour that this hotel is working on becoming 5 star for 2014. A five star hotel in a place like this, id come every month if I could! Go for it Hotel Kolocep, but work on your food, get real fruit juice and please do something about those wasps!

We stayed at Villas Kolocep 8-15th September. The island was exactly what we had hoped for. It had wonderful scenery, walks and a lovely beach in front of the hotel. It was peaceful and unspoilt. We were able to travel to Dubrovnik and Lopud on the ferry with very little effort and both trips were unmissable. However the hotel did not live up to expectations and did not match the many positive reviews on this site. The room was functional and clean.. We paid for and got a sea view. For us the sea view was an essential part of our enjoyment of this holiday. We were lucky and had a room on the ground floor with a few steps to climb. We did witness many elderly guests, some with walking aids struggling with the steps and slopes to higher rooms. This property is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. Some reviewers have stated that you cannot expect edible food for the money paid. We paid slightly more for 4 star all inclusive in Majorca and the food was very good, the rooms 3x the size and infinitely more comfortable. The breakfast at Villas Kolocep was acceptable. The bread was fresh and delicious, there was a good selection of cold meats and cheeses and some fruit. The omelette girl did a fantastic job and her freshly cooked omelettes were always worth eating. The hot food was never hot and better missed. At night, the food always looked unappetising and tasted worse. The freshly cooked pasta was the best bet, but still lacked interesting ingredients. We ate in the a la carte twice, which was better, but we would not have returned if it had been a restaurant at home. When we decided to treat the hotel as a bed and breakfast our holiday improved immensely. We ate at all the local restaurants and had good food in each. The staff in the hotel were always friendly and helpful. The cleaners did an excellent job and the girls serving in the a la carte were very efficient and well trained.
There is a lot of work to be done in this hotel to make it even a 4 star. The rooms and the bathrooms are currently too small. If I were booking a superior room I would expect a sea view , but Thompsons do not state this is the case. This is the first hotel we have stayed in for many years, which does not provide mattresses on the poolside sunbeds. It is very difficult to chill out and relax when it is impossible to get comfortable.
We had a lovely holiday, but this was due to the location and the pleasant meals we had in local restaurants. We would recommend Kolocep as a destination, but not the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room, that is what makes staying here worthwhile.

Just back from the Hotel Villas Kolocep, having stayed for a week (8-15 September). It has to be said its a beautiful setting with magnificent views over the bay and the mountains beyond (if your lucky to get an apartment with such a view!) We booked a sea view and got a good one, other guests that arrived at the same time as us had also done the same and weren't so lucky. THEY WERE NOT PLEASED, and were told the agents had taken bookings for 4 sea views more than there actually were. THE FOOD, well I know some reviewers have said what do you expect for a 3 star hotel, well I'll tell you, its simple, we expect better quality food and to be able to put a decent meal together onto a plate from the buffet and we struggled every evening, the vegetables were soggy the meat and the fish didn't look appetising, the cream on the mostly sponge deserts tasted like shaving foam, and NO ICE CREAM as an option, everywhere we have ever been there has always been ice cream. (You can't win em all). Meal service ends at 9.30pm and if your still finishing your drink and having a chat they turn out the lights and close the bar at 9.45pm. You have then to use the cocktail bar in the garden which is set out nice but the cocktails we had were poor and expensive. If all the guests decided to use this at the same time it would not accommodate them all.
We have viewed the artists impression of the proposed redevelopment of this hotel ready for next season and by all accounts it will become an all inclusive 4/5 star hotel under a new name. The plans look good, and if they are achieved it will be a minor miracle, the whole place needs a complete make over to bring it up to a 4 star let alone a 5 star. We took the ferry to Lopud (the next island) a lot nicer in our view. Go and take a look at the 4 star hotel on Lopud and you can see the kind of upgrade that is needed at Kolocep. Its not all bad though, the rooms are cleaned daily with clean towels if needed, the staff are friendly and helpful, Bojan the Thomson rep was great very friendly helpful guy. There's plenty of trips to be had so you can't get bored, do go to Dubrovnik and do the wall, but go early to avoid the rush, and the wine tour was great. Happy holidays.

Room Tip: We were in room 203 and when the apartment above flushed their toilet it sounded like Victoria Falls...

I am sitting on my bed in my very small room because it's pouring down with rain and there's nowhere to go. No lounge, no bar, no seating area at all. The island is beautiful but nowhere to go for a coffee out of the rain.
Plus no entertainment unless you want Croatian lessons. The free wi fi dies not exist, nor does the trip to Venice that was in our brochure.

The hotel is not suited to any person not fit, the outside steps are steep with no handrail and lots of them before you even get to the stairs to the room. We had to carry our cases up all these steps which nearly killed me.

The food is awful, lukewarm overcooked vegetables swimming in a water with two choices of meat, I think it is meat, and cake for pudding. Breakfast is no better, cold hard boiled eggs, lukewarm porridge, no bacon or sausage but if you want tomatoes they are covered in cheese!

If this is going to be a five star hotel it will need a chef and lifts to start and then some major refurbishment.

We were lucky with our accommodation at the hotel - sea view, huge balcony, low level - so we didn't have to suffer the climb to our room; the buffet food for dinner was pretty bad so we abandoned that after the first night. The local Konobas are much better than the hotel and are inexpensive - if you have a bottle of wine with dinner you may pay no more for your meal in the local café than you will in the hotel ... and there's a fantastic restaurant at Gornje Celo called Konoba Skerac - this is a 40 minute walk over the hills but is well worth it with a great meal for two, including wine, for about £60. Obviously a bit more expensive but life's too short to suffer poor food, particularly on a holiday!

Room Tip: Go for the low level in Villa 8 with sea view

Most of the reviews i have read regarding this hotel have been very favourable but i tend to disagree. Having visited the island only last week i found the location and the scenery absolutly stunning but the hotel itself didn't live up to the location. For instance the food was very average and never more than lukewarm.
It was advertised that there would be entertainment but that was non-existant. It also advertised a pool bar but that was also non-existant and the drinks were very pricey
Also,i think it should be emphasised more about the slopes and the number of steps to get to the upper rooms.
The staff however, were very good and always very helpful and the rooms very clean.
I understand that next year it will become a 5 star, couples only, all inclusive hotel. All i can say is there will have to be a very very big all round improvement to achieve this.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea facing room and on a lower floor

We have just come back from a 2 week stay at Villas Kolocep, and found it to be a lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings.
We went with Thomsons, and the rep Bojan was superb and deserves a special mention - friendly, available, approachable, caring and professional at all times. (Bojan - I don't know if you ever get to read these, but thanks for all your help. You made our stay extra special.)
The hotel was always spotlessly clean - the cleaning staff do a superb job - thanks Marja!
We were in Villa 7 ( the hotel is comprised of 8 separate blocks, each with a ground, 1st and 2nd floor) and for our first week were in 707 and 708 on the 2nd floor. As these had quite small balconies and we were a party of 4, we asked to change to the ground floor rooms 701 and 702 for our second week, as these rooms had a large balcony that we could share. The hotel obliged with no fuss at all. Both had sea views, and it was lovely to sit there on the balcony in the evenings with a glass or two of wine (local red peljesac from the supermarket at the other end of the bay - 5 minute walk) and listen to the donkey and the church bells.
The food was good, with lots of choice. There was a fish dish on every night, as well as a choice of meat dishes, vegetables, salads, and pasta. We were rather disappointed by the a la carte "Italian" restaurant which had to be booked in advance, and which we used just the once, preferring the more informal buffet. Breakfasts were also good - with a selection of juices, scrambled egg, sausage (German style), baked tomatoes, porridge, fruit, hams, cheeses, boiled eggs, croissants, yoghurt, etc. etc. You can also have fried eggs or omelettes freshly prepared while you wait.
The island itself is beautiful and there are walks all over - no cars with stunning views and wild herbs, flowers and pine trees. You could spend all your time on the island for a lovely relaxing chill-out, but there are also opportunities to visit some fantastic places nearby.
We booked 3 trips - all highly recommended if you like to see and experience the local culture. They were booked through Bojan the Thomsons rep, and we went to Mostar over the border into Bosnia, to the nearby island of Korcula, and also to Montenegro (Kotor).
The agency used were Gulliver Travel, and on each trip we enjoyed the services of guide Toni who accompanied us on the coach, and who was a font of knowledge on all things from history, politics, culture, nature, geography, language - you name it! Not only was he knowledgeable, but also interesting, entertaining, stimulating, funny and passionate. His fascinating running commentaries were like having an audible easy-read guide book taken along with you on the trip. Thanks Toni for making our Croatian experience so interesting.
Would we go back? You bet - but don't change the hotel too much - it's great as it is. Thanks to all the staff at the hotel we had a wonderful relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: We would recommend sea view in villa 7 or 8 (701, 702, shared balcony)
