“Austere and utilitarian, but good view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2011

Hotel Kompas doesn't engender fondness. It's a large, souless, modern hotel. The entry to reception involves a walk down two flights of stairs, so beware if you have heavy luggage!

The hotel is built on a slope, so the reception is on the top floor with the rooms located in tiers beneath. Ground level opens up to the beach, however, so location is a redeeming feature. The location is in a residential area about 5km from downtown Dubrovnik, but there are connecting buses. There's also a supermarket/shopping complex and a few restaurants located in the residential area.

All the rooms share a view of a bay below, and the Adriatic sea. The rooms themselves are quite anonymous, but they're clean, and there's that view. The hotel lacks warmth or the human touch, with dingy corridors and cheerless breakfast/dining area. The staff are not surly, but have the attitude that they're doing you a favour if you ask for anything.

There are much nicer boutique hotels in the same area - old converted houses with colour and charm, but if you have a big group, this hotel is adequate.

The Kompas has a good location right on the bay at Lapad. For the cost we paid it had adequate facilities overall, and was quiet apart from the incredibly noisy folk party on the eve of saint Blaise's day (2 Feb), but this is a big event for the locals.
Airport transfer arranged through hotel was very good (BMW 7 series), and comparatively good value.

I spent 4 nights with half board deal. The hotel is quiet, the room was very comfortable, the food was excellent, especially the dinner. My only disappointment was the gym, which it's very outdated.

We chose the Hotel Kompas based on other TripAdvisor reviews, and were pleased with our stay. We had a room facing away from the sea (and the outdoor evening music), so it was very quiet and surprisingly spacious. The breakfast was excellent, with a wide range of hot and cold items, in a very large banquet room. Front desk staff were efficient and helpful, and all spoke English.

If you are arriving by the Dubrovnik bus system and have a lot of luggage: use the #5 bus to get to the hotel, the #5 does not run as often as the #6 but it stops directly at the upper entrance to the hotel and is not as crowded. The #6 bus runs very frequently but is usually very crowded, and the #6 bus stop is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The #6 bus is convenient for sightseeing trips into the old city.

Reception is on the 9th floor, which is a minor nuisance if you want to leave your room key at the desk when going out for the day on the ground floor.

Good value for money. Staff helpful and friendly. Room clean but sheets not changed while we were there. Very close to beach and restaurants and bars but still quiet. didn't get sea view but also therefore didn't hear live entertainment at night from the room. Breakfast adequate, not outstanding nor always piping hot but lovely breakfast room with sea views.

Stayed in this hotel for week recently. The staff are lovely, we were booked into a standard room but on our arrival we found we had been upgraded to a balcony room overlooking the pool/bay. The room while small was very clean and was seen to daily. The location is only 4k from the Old Town and takes only 10mins on the number 6 bus, be warned however that the buses do get quite full at all times during the day, but are very regular and run on time.
The breakfast in the hotel was good, big selection of fruit & hot breakfast, pastries, cakes & cereal. My only suggestion would be if you like a nice cup of tea in the morning bring your own tea bags!
The area of Lapad is lovely but it is quiet and I would recommend it for those on a couples holiday or family holiday.

had a very enjoyable stay, hotel staff very attentive especially as we had our 8 month old son with us. location was brill for us as we only had to walk a little way to catch the bus to the old city which was brilliant. selection of food was very good plus there was plenty of eating places near to the hotel. every night there was live entertainment a good mixture of music. we even left a 26yr old teddybear behind, and they have arranged with Mato Pusak to return it back to us very impressive indeed.
