“Cheap and cheerful great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2010

We spent a week at the kompas Hotel in Lapad, it is set over nine floors. We had a standard room as we were to stingy to pay the extra 20 euros per night for a sea view room. the hotel is clean and tidy and your room is cleaned each day and bed sheets chnaged etc. Breakfast is a continental style and is served between 6.30-9.30am. The hotel overlooks the sea and is beautiful in terms of locality. the rooms are clean and tidy but nothing special, but if your really looking for somewhere to sleep then its perfect. There is an inside and outside pool and use of a gym. You need to book time in the sauna and Jaccuzzzi the day ebfore you intned on going.

The hotel itslef is on teh main strip but very quiet, i would recommend the Paladium resturant for food, its really nice food and really well priced. Around £30 for two of us with wine. There are all sorts of places to eat but some are really expensive so we found the cheaper ones and stuck to them. The Bella Donna also i would reocmmend for a good Pizza.

There is a really nice walk to the right of the hotel, which leads to the cabanna beach and is around a 2 mile coastal walk. We really enjoyed it as we ended up at the old Harbour where we stopped for lunch.

The hotel is a short bus journey to the Old twon which is a must see, you get a number 6 bus from the top of the strip and you can get your tickets at the hotel reception. the bus journey is aorund 15 minutes.

The Old town is beautiful and costs around £10 to go into teh city walkks, but is a must, its steep and their are lots (i mean lots) of steep steps, but well worth the climb.

At the old twon there is also a boat that goes over to the Island of Lockrum, my favourite Island, its got wild turtles and peacoks, and a lovely resturant in the centre for a light lunch. its cheap as well to go over on the bot and its a really good walk around there.

You can also catch a boat over to cavta which is lovely as well. Its a bit more expensive to get the boat and you can get a number 10 bus from the bus station which is a cheaper option. cavtat is lovely as well and although it doesnt take long to walk around its well worth a visit.

We also did the three isalnd tour, there is not much to do on the first two islands, but the third island of lopod has a steep long walk to sunnyj beach which is beautiful for views and the houses on the walk are gorgeous. i would recommend going on one of the bigger boats as the smaller ones are cramped and uncomfortable and you have to sit at tables all day.

The old town is beautiful and we even went to see the Aquarium whilst we were there. A week is enough to see and do the surrounding areas, and if planning to go for longer it may be worth going to stay in Split as well.

The land is still unspoilt and not touristy and has an innocence about it that was loveley. The croation people are genuinely proud of their country and there is no litter anywhere. I felt genuinely safe whilst i was there and its friendly, laid back and hospitable.

The hotel is set in a pretty location with a bay in front (if you pay extra for a sea view).BUT it can be noisy and i imagine in the high season it would be very noisy as there are bars and restaurants closeby and the sound echoes especially as there was no gasket round the glass in the patio doors so the glass rattles and lets the noise through. The service was very good with staff eager to please. The food was very good with a large choice for breakfast and dinner .The indoor pool was a disappointment - there is no proper chaging room - only a smelly shower room and the water was freezing. The gym was no doubt state of the art in the 1960/70s but very dated now.

We stayed in August 2008, the hotel was nice, nothing to rave about but was more than sufficient for what we wanted. The rooms are clean and tidy, if perhaps a little dated, the pool was a good size and often quite quiet around it was a lot of people went to the beach. The breakfast buffet was good with a nice range of food, we didn't eat in the evening at the hotel as we preferred to go out and about. The location isn't ideal for getting to the old city as you have to get a bus, but it was no major problem, you just can't walk to the main attraction of the city. I'd recomment it as a good cheap option but there is better out there.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2009

I stayed at this hotel with my wife, for three days. The hotel is located in an amazing place, right by the sea. The seaview is amazing. And Eventhough it was end September (last week) the sea was quite with no tides. If you are expecting a clean and quite place to stay, yes you can choose Hotel Kompas. Nothing very special, but everything is within expectations. Please remember, the reception is nearly one floor down to the road (we went there by taxi) so I had to carry our luggages down to the reception. And also our room is in 8th floor (one floor down to the reception) and during check-in and check-out process of crowded groups, we've been hearing their noise. Beside these two points, they provide clean room, nice and quite location, and that was all our expectations. If the hotel would be bought buy another group and renovated and escalated to 4 stars or maybe 5 stars hotel, it'd much better, because the view and the sea was amazing.

This hotel is located in just the perfect place right next to the sea and very short distance to shops & bars. The food was lovely, I am a vegetarian & thought I may struggle but I was never short of things to eat. The staff are very friendly & fuss over your every need, they even shoo the wasps away for you. I felt very safe in Croatia and you could leave your bag on the beach and never felt it may get pinched. The bus ride is quite short to Dubrovnik thank goodness, as this is the worst bit of the holiday. There is no health & safety here the bus will be crammed with people & in that heat it wasn't very pleasant. The walls at Dubrovnik are a must but make sure you don't go in the middle of the day as it gets unbearably hot. The sea is the clearest I have seen and full of fish even in the shoreline. Another must is the trip on the immitation 16th Century Galleon to the 3 nearest Islands which was superb. The temperature was between 30 - 35 everyday which was a little too hot for me but the air con in the rooms was very good and the pool was good. The evening entertainment at the hotel finished at 11 oclock every night which suited me, however if you wanted to stay out later there are plenty of bars nearby.

We stayed here in two separate rooms with two teenage girls for a week and really liked the place. Make an extra investment and book seaview room to enjoy the scenary and beautiful evening at the balcony. We felt, that the location was one of the best in the area: end of walking street and next to restaurants, rocky shore and a beach. We were worried about the hotels's salt water pool before the visit, however it was very pleasent. Showers next to the pool need a bit repair though. Even the hotel looks a bit old, the rooms were clean and staff was extremely friendly and helpful. There is also free Wireless LAN in the reception area !
