“Best view of Dubrovnik”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

The Excelsior is ideally situated: far enough from Dubrovnik city center so you only have the sea to listen to during the night, and close enough to just walk 10 min and be on the old city main plaza. But the real treat is the view on Dubrovnik, from your room (ask a room with balcony in the old aisle), from the terrace upstairs to have a nice cocktail or from the terrace at sea level to enjoy fine dining (amazing fish to choose from) with candles and the old harbor fully lit!
The room we were in was not particularly big, the view was great but the furniture has not been upgraded recently, definitely not a 5* level, but decent. Service is good to very good, but could be even better. We will come back to see how they progress and enjoy the fine view!

The facilities and the hotel in general was superclean and the staff was very friendly.
Breakfast was delicous and I liked the service & especially the atmosphere at the bar.
The location is perfect, since you can easily walk to the old town/center - plus you get a great view.

I'm coming back soon!

I stayed here with my 2 bridesmaids and my parents on the night before my wedding, as I didn't want to stay with my fiancée and our large group to ensure tradition.

We also had one of my other bridesmaids and her 6 month old who didn't stay at the hotel but spent the afternoon and evening with us, and came back the next morning to get ready.

Our rooms were adjoining as requested and were large and spacious with an amazing shower! There was also a bath in both or the rooms and his and her basins

We enjoyed the sea deck and had a few cocktails whilst sun bathing and jumping into the sea. This was an excellent perk overlooking the city walls.

There was a wedding happening in the restaurant above and we could hear some of the speeches through the windows which was nice.

We then changed for dinner which we had in the piano bar. The pumpkin and ginger soup was lovely and I had the lamb for a main which again was Devine and cooked to perfection. We were also given a lovely fish canapé between courses which was unexpected and again very tasty. The wine was poured for us regularly and the waiters were very attentive.

Breakfast the next morning had lots and lots of choice and we all had individual pots of coffee. We were the first ones in at 6am and there was a good choice of fruit pastries full English etc and eggs were available to order how you liked.

Later that morning we ordered room service for lunch and had sandwiches to make sure our stomachs were lined for the wedding. We also ordered prosecco to the room which came in a lovely very fancy cooler.

Dinner came to just over £230 for 6 and the hotel was just over £450 for 5 for 1 night.

For a luxury experience definitely stay at this hotel

Arrived at 1300 and had to wait over one hour for room to be free. Booked deluxe double room with balcony/sea view. Given room 2 in old building. Room small and next to piano bar.
Asked for larger room and allocated room 15. This slightly larger in both room and balcony.
Walkway between kitchen and event area at end of balcony. This used by trolley pushing staff most days and evenings making privacy non existent. Also no barriers/screens between balconies.
Main restaurant open for breakfast only about which we had not been informed. Room service menu similar to aircraft. Main course, One choice each of beef, fish or chicken.
Housekeeping almost non existent. Had to request clean glasses.
No coffee/tea making machine except on request. No breakfast order card. No daily weather/news letter.
This is not a Five Star hotel as portrayed.
As discerning travellers we could not recommend this hotel.

Dear Julian C
I would like to thank you for staying at our Hotel during your recent visit to Dubrovnik. I am saddened to read that your overall experience in relation to the service provided did not meet your expectations. These are definitely not the standards we are promoting, and, in the majority of cases – delivering. Not wanting to diminish your experience or your comments in any way I have to add that you have arrived at 1300 and your room was ready at 1345 (official check in time is 1400). We are always doing our best to accommodate our guest prior the check in time if possible, I hope you understand that sometimes especially in high season this might not be possible. Our room sizes goes from 24m2 to 28m2 (except the suites that are larger), due to the position of the hotel and a part of the hotel (in which you stayed in) that is under UNESCO protection all rooms do not have the same size. Because of the same reasons the hotel is not allowed to put higher barriers (than existing ones)/screens between the rooms. It is true that our main restaurant is open for breakfast only and at the entrance of the restaurant we do have displayed working hours of our main restaurant together with working hours of all our other restaurants (Prora, Abakus bar and Thai table). Also all working hours can be found in our guest directory placed in each room. Our room service menu is a little bit shorter than a regular one but our guest still have a choice of four cold starters, three soups, four risotto and pasta, three snacks, main course as you mentioned one of each beef, chicken, fish, three vegetarian meals, kinds menu and four desserts. It is true as you mentioned tea and coffee making facilities are upon request only and we do not have a breakfast order card (we do not hang anything on our door looks) but our guest do have a possibility of choosing between continental breakfast (for a service charge only) vital breakfast and romantic breakfast (for a small additional charge) from room service menu all of that delivered to you room at requested time. I do apologise for glasses that have not been replaced as should be but I wouldn't call our housekeeping service non existing since we are changing our guests bed sheets on a daily basis together with all towels in the room and we do have a turn down service in the evening. It is also true that sometimes we do host weddings that all end before midnight and sometimes is inevitable not to pass in front of some of the guest rooms but we are always doing our best and try not to disturb their peace and tranquillity. One more time I would like to apologise for not meeting your expectations.
Kind regards

Writing this review is very simple: fantastic hotel, fantastic location, fantastic service, fantastic food, fantastic pool and private beach. Dubrovnik old town is practically at the door step. Worth coming back for sure.

Just returned from a week at the Excelsior. The hotel has the perfect location with stunning views over to the walled city, and easy 10 minute stroll there.
We found the staff in general to be friendly and efficient. Our special praise would go to the bar staff. A small team of regulars who do a really professional job, and are pleasant.
Only two minor quibbles- 1) a hotel of this rating really should offer padded sun loungers for a bit more comfort. 2) Floor zero has a door in which is used when returning from town which is great. However, for some bizarre reason there is a piano in the lobby there. Late night guests returning having had a few glasses of 'Galic' immediately think they are Bobby Crush. Good fun I know, but not great if you want a sleep around rooms 007-010.
