“I have to pay extra for nat geographic and history channels”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We had a wonderful 7 night stay in a room overlooking the sea. Service is great and only a 10 minute walk to the old city. Having travelled for 2 months through France, Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro, this was the only hotel which would not supply free worldwide television channels. When paying up to 300 euros per night we expected better.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a sea view room. You can open the balcony doors and get beautiful fresh air an...

Lovely and elegant hotel in all aspects. We had a room with a balcony with breathtaking views facing the water (and views of the old town), which definitely was worth it. The room was slightly on the small size (though the bathroom was spacious).

Great location in terms of an easy short walk to the old City, but with the benefit of great views and a sublime private swimming area - ideal for escaping the hot summer weather. Excellent service.

Room Tip: I think a lot depends on the room here- make sure to get a room in the new section with a balcony...

Without doubt the best placed hotel in Dubrovnik - some 15 minutes walking from the East gate into Dubrovnik. With stunning views of the Old City into the harbour, Facilities fantastic and the bar and terrace superb with wonderful staff. The breakfast buffet was large, varied, impressive and tasty with the sparrows joining the guests for breakfast outside if you dared leave your table with food on it - we all need feeding though.
The hotel restaurants Japanese and the specials were very enjoyable though expensive. All eating in Dubrovnik is not cheap and the fish everywhere is excellent. Particularly recommend the Posat Restaurant just outside the Pile Gate (East) and the Moby Dick inside the town both where.

Room Tip: Best Rooms Floor 0 with balcony.

Returned to the Excelsior after four years and booked the same type of room (king size, sea view with balcony) but this time were put in the older part of the hotel (directly beneath reception). Very disappointed with the room. About half the size of the ones down the corridor, the king size bed takes up most of the room with some furniture squashed towards the other end. In a room which costs over £300 per night you don't expect to be squeezing past bags to get to the bathroom or falling over each other. Bathroom was fine, a shower over the bath which some might find it slightly difficult getting in and out of (again not as good as the separate showers in the newer part of the hotel).

Balcony was fine with nice views of the old city, though there wasn't any shade and it was floodlit at night. Views are the best part about the hotel so definitely make sure you book a room with one.

Complained about the room several times to reception and left feedback on departure and in the subsequent survey they sent me. No response or apology from management (though no doubt there'll be a response on here!). The upshot is the rooms are ok and have great views but there are such big discrepancies within the 'class' of room you feel overcharged for what you get.

The rest of the hotel is nice, piano bar good if a little soulless. Indoor pool and spa all excellent as is the beautiful sunbathing area (an old quay) where you can swim in the sea with beautiful views of Dubrovnik. Breakfast has a good choice and you can have it on the terrace with more amazing views. It's a short, pleasant walk into town where there are plenty of bars and restaurants.

Based on my first trip it was one of my favourite hotels, but based on this most recent experience I can't recommend it for the price.

We do stay currently in the hotel and spend here part of our honeymoon. The hotel has ideal location for combining beach holiday and city visits. Old town is just 5 min by walk and the hotel has its own beach, which is nice. Service is good, but the rooms are slightly outdated.
There is one major issue to be considered before booking this hotel: there is a beach disco just next to the hotel and if you are not able to sleep with disco noise, you might have to wait until 3 or 4 am before going to sleep. We arrived on saturday, I called around 2 am the receptionist. I was told that the disco has permit only for Saturday and only until 3 am. The disco finished at around 4 on That night. It is Monday midnight now and the disco is on. Yesterday it finished at 3. It is annoying for 300 eur p.night not being able to sleep.

On the other hand, breakfast officially ends at 10:30 (you can stay longer normally), so you have to decide wethermto skip breakfast or sleeping unless you are fine with 5-6 hours of sleep during your holiday.

Dear Guest,
We would like to thank you for taking the time to review hotel Excelsior on Tripadvisor. On this occasion I would like to extend our sincere apology for inconvenience you experienced during your stay in our Hotel. The noise came from the next door beach club and unfortunately we can not influence on that situation.

This is the best option for a quality hotel in Dubrovnik. However, the reception area and service level let it down, which is what you would expect from an international 5 star hotel.

Pros: position and views of the old town. Its a short scenic walk from old town, rooms are a good size and I suggest you get a balcony sea view room in the new section of the hotel. Breakfast was included in the main restaurant with very good buffet selection and a nice view. Swimming off the front of the hotel is nice (although no beach) deck chairs and umbrellas with table service. Its great coming back to this after walking around the old town. The Bar is nice for a night cap before and/or after dinner.

Cons: service just lacks attention. Check in is chaotic and the staff as per other reviews just haven't been trained in friendly customer service. We didn't really feel like asking for dinner suggestions or directions, which is not great as I often book good hotels to get a knowledgeable concierge. A good dinner, lunch or local tip can make a holiday. At breakfast they forgot our eggs one morning and coffees were a long time coming, but when on holidays you get over it. The gym is very limited with a few cardio machines anyone weights machine if you feel the need to work out. King size beds are two king singles jammed together and made up as one.

Overall I would recommend staying at this hotel, for position and views. Go in with a 4 star expectation and you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic hotel in a brilliant location. Just a 5 minute stroll from the Old City. We had a room with a sea view and balcony, with amazing views of the sea and the Old City walls. Rooms were very clean and breakfast staff and cleaning staff were very friendly. Self service breakfast buffet was ordinary especially as 5* hotel. Would go back.

Room Tip: Select level 0 in old part of hotel chose room low numbers. You will have great sea views with large...
