“A very special place with wonderful views and facilities”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We spent 2 nights at The Excelsior. It is a short and pleasant stroll to the old town, the views are sensational. The indoor swimming pool is great and well complemented by the gym, sauna, spa and wellness centre. However, to be able to swim directly in front of the hotel in the beautiful Adriatic is wonderful. The breakfasts were great too. Expensive but a treat. This hotel has been frequented by royalty and movie stars for the last century! Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We had a sea view with balcony.

The location of the hotel is probably the best in Dubrovnik. It is situated on the port side of the old city and away from the more touristy and busier gate. The views from the hotel are picture perfect. We had booked a deluxe room but got upgraded to a suite. All i can say is wow!! It was fabulous with an enormous bath room with the pefect view, a living room, bed room and large balcony all with the perfect view. The rooms were all well appointed and immaculately clean. The only (small) criticism would be that the glasses in the room were not cleaned on any of the days we were there.
The rest of the hotel is lovely, we spent the afternoons of out 3 day stay sunbathing on the outside deck and taking full advantage of the large indoor pool and spa facilities, At times we were the only ones using it.
The breakfasts were substantial with plenty of choice and the staff friendly and helpful.
Getting to the old city was only a 5 minute walk and so we ate our meals there as opposed to the hotel.
Would highly recomend this hotel as a special treat

Room Tip: rooms with a sea view are a must

This is an amazing hotel, if you get a room with a balcony overlooking the sea, then you are in for a treat, just watching the large private boats come and go is worth it. But be warned the cheaper back rooms are below street level and you look out onto a wall with ugly pipes, dark and depressing. These rooms are not worth a 1 star. The breakfast was the best hotel breakfast food I have every had, from full English to cakes, cold cheeses and meats, a huge selection, that just keeped coming.
There is a gallery from the people, who have stayed there including, Maggie thatcher and The Queen, when we were there, Morgan Freeman was staying (we didn't see him), and Nigel Kennedy who was performing in Dubrovnik.
The private patio is direct onto the sea, so you can sunbath or swim, and if you wan to be indoors the pool is huge. We was there for my partners daughter marriage and it was the most romantic wedding I have every been to.
Try this out if you can afford it, but don't get a back room.

After a week long stay at a different hotel in Dubrovnik and then a hop to Mljet, we were throughly tired and ready to head home, but not before spending two more night at Excelsior. Wow! what a way to end a trip. Gorgeous views from each restaurants. Our room looked at the water but didn't have an balcony. That would be the only improvement I wish we had to our experience. My daughter loved the indoor pool and jacuzzi. After a cold dip in the Adriactic right outside the hotel, it was a delight to dip into a warm pool or jacuzzi. We also enjoyed steam room and sauna. My only other nit pick would be that i wish the towels were available outside near the beach area. Each time I needed one I had to walk up the ramp throught the pool to the desk inside. Also they don't serve food near the beach or at the pool. You have to get dressed and dine at the tables near the beach. That added a crinkle into our relaxing afternoon. Usually we just eat and lounge and swim.
Other than that, it was a lovely hotel. so close to old town that it was a delight to walk there in the morning, come back for a swim/nap and then head out early evening for dinner and come back for drinks. We had a 5 year old with us so appreciated the short distance back and forth. We would definitely stay here again at a heart beat but would push for a balcony room.

This 5* hotel is literally a 5min walk downhill to the old town and is located on the cliffside with the most fantastic views. The cable car is approximately 10mins away and is reached by either climbing up quite a few steps or taking the gentler climb up the pavement. The views from the top are just spectacular and well worth the effort.

We were a party of five adults so caused a slight problem to the hotel as we needed a room for 3 which they admitted they do not generally accommodate (the website we booked through advertised triple rooms!!!!) After initially giving us a room that really was too small for us and, following an immediate complaint to the duty manager, they redeemded themselves royally by giving us a suite comprising of double bedroom, sitting room with bed settee, huge bathroom with jacuzzi bath and walk-in shower as well as a separate cloakroom. We had a large balcony with a couple of sun loungers, chairs and table overlooking the sea and with a wonderful view of the old town.

Although the hotel does not have a beach, it does have a tiled area outside the indoor 25m swimming pool where sun loungers are available, but there is a small sandy beach down the hill on the way to the old town. The pool area also offered two jacuzzis, hydro pool, sauna, roman bath and turkish bath as well as rather interesting ergonomically shaped, heated wooden beds which were a most relaxing way to unwind after our daily swimming workout!

The breakfasts were most extensive - champage (or bucks fizz), cold cuts, fully cooked breakfast, fresh fruit, yoghurts and breads/pastries. Each morning we were welcomed by friendly, helpful staff and could not fault the service we received. In fact, we were greated with a smile by every member of staff we encountered.

I would certainly stay at this hotel again and look forward to a return trip in the future.

Room Tip: Once you have made your booking, I would suggest that you contact the hotel direct and request a sea...

What a lovely hotel in the most beautiful setting possible. A sea view room is well worth the extra if you can afford it - especially if it has a balcony (beware: some rooms with a sea view do not). However if you can't there are plenty of places in the hotel to relax for as long as you wish - a large terrace and a large paved area with sun beds where the sea is the outdoor pool. All of these places offer the same spectacular view: the old walled city and its harbour and the island of Lokrum. If you are lucky you may get a fabulous firework display arranged to celebrate a special occasion as we did the other evening. Take your binoculars as there is much activity on the water: private yachts and motor cruisers moored out in the bay, canoeists, ferry boats and swimmers - some taking advantage of a traditional seaside beach which is almost next to the hotel. The walk into town is only a 10 minute stroll where you will find lots of lovely restaurants all competing for your trade.

The hotel - recently refurbished - offers every comfort. There is lots of choice for breakfast with a variety of menus in the hotel's restaurants. They are of course pricey but this is normal for a hotel of this class.

Recommended: a 3 island boat trip (magical, very relaxing and with time to swim if you wish), a return trip to the pretty resort of Cavtat (45 minutes) and a trip up on the cable car to the war memorial and museum.

We are already planning our next visit to the Excelsior hotel and we are not yet into our second week of our 2 week stay.

Room Tip: A sea view room is obviously better than one without and if it has a balcony too then all the better...
