“Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

Spent a week at the 3 star Argosy and although this wasnt the hotel originally booked we had a very pleasant stay. We had booked the Tirena Hotel but on arrival they didnt have our booking and we were moved to the Argosy which was a bit of an incovenient start to the holiday. There was only 1 room left on the 1st floor but before we had even seen it the hotel reception staff had said if we werent happy they would move us the following day as we had originally booked a balacony and this was a ground floor room. Room was clean but a bit dark and dated. The following day we moved to a room on the 2nd floor with balcony which had a lovely view over the garden and you could see the sea. Room clean, birght and airy. Staff very pleasant at the hotel , good choice at breakfast and cant fault the drinks they poured at the bar (bad head most mornings ensued) An older client group stays at the hotel so enternainment cheesey but we went out at night and returned for nightcaps. Only drawback is the pool area not very big but we went up to the tirena as they are all on the same 'complex'. Dubrovnik is a beautiful place and from this base you have the choice of bars and restaurants in Lapad with Old Dubrovnik only being a 20 min bus journey and buses run every 10 minutes till 1am. Took a boat trip to Elaphite islands although not quite as described and they limited the alcohol really as they ran out of the unlimited croatian brandy after the 2nd stop and to get to the first island we werent on the boat but taken by a different boat. Defintely recommend Buono in Lapad for food , Taj Mahal in Old Dubrovnik is a must as well for bosnian food. (Dont let the name put you off). Will defo return to Croatia and wld stay at Argosy again.

Room Tip: ask for 2nd floor or above , rooms on 1st floor are bit dated and dismal.

Stayed as part of a Riveira travel group for 4 nights. To describe the hotel as "dated" is being kind, it was like a throw back to a 70's style vacation. However the rooms were spacious and clean through the Formica cupboard doors and plastic chairs grated a bit. WiFi was available throughout the hotel. The surrounding grounds were a little shabby too though the view from our room onto the gardens at the front of the hotel was not too bad. Another guest described the restaurant as like a "cafeteria" such was the noise and din but the food was pretty good and there was plenty of it with chefs constantly cooking and replenishing the various dishes so all in all a thumbs up for the dining. The evening entertainment was fine with a couple of local musicians plying their trade. However the bar area was far too small given that it was a bit chilly outside in the evening and the bar service almost sloth like - more due to a shortage of staff than any inefficiency on the part of those present. Other Valamar hotels close by seemed to be of a higher standard but we understand this hotel will undergo a full refurbishment next year. As a base for tours around Dubrovnik this isn't a bad place to stay but if I had chosen this for a weeks stay with the intent of lounging around the hotel we would have been hugely disappointed.

We stayed at the Argosy for four nights in mid May 2013 as part of our Riviera tour of Croatia.
The first point to make is that the Argosy is extremely large. It is situated on a peninsular (Babib kuk) along with four other hotels all owned by the same group. It is about a fifteen minute bus ride to Dubrovnik, which is not too bad as the terminus is near the hotel, but it does cost about £1.50 each way.
The rooms are dated and in need of refurbishment. Our room was on the ground floor ( this was the "2nd" floor for some reason) and outside was a communal balcony / walkway. As there was no curtain screen at the window there was a total lack of privacy.
The real problem with the Argosy is the restaurant.
If you can imagine several hundred people arriving at the same time and the ensuing scramble for food you will have a fair picture of a meal at the Argosy. It resembles a large secondary school canteen or a 1960's holiday camp. Most of the hot food - chicken, fish, bacon, eggs, etc are fried on hotplates in the restaurant and whilst this may work well in a smaller hotel in the Argosy it causes more delays and adds to the general pandemonium. It also fills the restaurant with a smell of burning fat. The food itself was not too bad (once you had managed to get hold of some)and the staff were reasonably helpful.
The Argosy was not too bad for a three star hotel if you can put up with the dining arrangements, it's isolated location and it's dated décor. However we would never stay there again.

Dear Guests,

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay at our hotel on TripAdvisor.
I am very sorry we did not completely meet your expectations in the matter you comment to us. Due to bad weather, or not nice enough to have seat outside, we were limited only to inside capacity of our restaurant and I can agree that restaurant was crowded several times in the May, and I can only feel very sorry that happened during your stay in Argosy hotel.
I was little surprised reading your comment regarding curtains because for sure we have curtains in every single room.
However, I am glad that beside bad marks for the restaurant you found our staff reasonably helpful and that you liked the food more than restaurant itself.
I hope you will change your mind regarding your stay in Argosy again and that we would be honoured to host you again.

Best regards,
Josip Konjevod-General Manager

Stayed four nights in Hotel Argosy. The setting was nice, might even elegant.
Breakfast was GREAT along with a nice view.
Free entertainment almost every night until 11:00.
Had to catch a bus to get into town, but the stop was 100 yards from the hotel; $6 round trip.

Room Tip: Get one with a balcony; most have one.

travelling independently, we were not sure what to expect, but when we arrived a little early we were welcomed and given an upgrade to a room with a balcony. The room was large, the balcony overlooked the garden, and also had a distant view to the sea. The furnishings are a little basic, but who is going to stay in their room for longer than they need in Dubrovnik?
The hotel is in a group run by Valamar, on a beautiful peninsula, Babin Kuk, on the edge of Dubrovnik. All the reception staff speak English and are very helpful. The buffet breakfast is lovely, open officially from 7, but seemd to be earlier most days . They appeared to open early at our request when we tentatively asked the night before! There is a buffet dinner as well, which we used a couple of times, when late back from trips. This is fine, but noisy.
There are other hotels in the group on the peninsula, with shops, cashpoint, outdoor restaurants, etc.
The very best thing about being at Babin Kuk is that a bus runs into 'town' every 15 minutes, from early in the morning to late at night.
If I were going back to Dubrovnik, I would definitely stay at the Argosy again.

Room Tip: our balcony room was very pleasant.

Like many others reviewers we stayed here for 4 nights as part of our Riviera Travel tour. Our first impression was not very good especially after our previous hotel. This hotel is a different proposition altogether. Much bigger, busier, and older. However, the longer we stayed the more this hotel grew on us. We had a pleasant enough room on the 4th floor with a reasonable sea view to the left although we looked directly on to a dining room below a a roof top with vent shafts. To the right we looked across to the the white bridge spanning the new Port of Dubrovnik and we could see the cruise liners coming into port. Our room was large and basic but immaculately clean and comfortable as was the bathroom. The dining room was a bit of a shock to us because it it so vast with many different seating area's. We learned after the first night to sit as far away from the centre as possible because the noise of chatter, crockery etc was overwhelming. Like eating in a large indoor swimming pool area with the noise and echo's. However, the food was brilliant with so many choices and we soon learned to find a table as far away as possible from the main area. There was gentle musical entertainment in the bar/lounge area off reception each evening. This was nice and not intrusive unless you wanted to join in. A short walk through the lovely grounds down to the beach which was pleasant and there is a small complex of bars, shops etc in the grounds too. A 15 minute bus ride into Dubrovnik. Buy your return ticket at hotel shop and catch the bus at the bottom of hotel drive. All in all a really good hotel that is gradually being updated.

We stayed here last week on a Riviera holiday and were impressed with the high standard, particularly the variety and quality of the food, despite the need to cater for large numbers. The room was well-equipped, the only downside being the noise which funnels up from the atrium, not only the music, but even just conversation. It stops at eleven though!

Easy to get in and out of Dubrovnik - as well as the bus it's about an hour and a half walk.

Room Tip: Away from atrium
