Located at the Sponza Palace at the end of Stradun, the Memorial Room of the Defenders of Dubrovnik is a small but powerful tribute to the brave residents who were killed during the brutal attack and bombardment by the Jugoslav Army, Navy and Airforce, as well as, extremist Serb paramilitary forces from Montenegro.
The haunting faces of simple people, young boys, fathers, brothers and old men and pictured individually and spread out across the walls of the room. When you look into their eyes you see the innocence of these brave souls, who died not attacking some far off enemy, but rather just defending their own families, friends, homes and in a more general sense, their country Croatia.
The bombardment of the city was watched by the world who refused to help stop this war crime. That's why the sense of abandonment and loneliness these brave soldiers must have felt would have been so terrifying. Yet they didn't choose to abandon the city (like the E.U. did), they chose bravely to defend their loved ones and homes and fight with little more than light arms against a huge army of tanks, cannons, missiles, warships, jet fighters and thousands of well armed troops. Absolutely amazing guts and determination that is only owned by the righteous and innocent protecting themselves in self-protection.
When your come to beautiful Dubrovnik, please visit this simple memorial and show your respect to these brave people who stopped the Serbs and Montenegrins from totally destroying this beautiful city. Without them, there would be nothing to visit.
