“Excellent Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2010

We stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was an excellent choice. A lovely location two miles from the old city at the edge of the harbour, beautiful and tranquil. The old city was easily reached - either by bus (five minute walk to the bus stop £1.25 each way if you buy your ticket on the bus, £1.00 if you buy your ticket from the kiosk which is at the bus stop), £7.50 each way by taxi.
The hotel itself is beautifully restored and charming. Our room was spacious, our bathroom huge and everything was spotlessly clean. We were on a B&B basis and the breakfast was extensive and freshly prepared for you rather than from a buffet that had been standing for some time. Whilst we could not fault the hotel for anything, the staff themselves were outstanding - helpful and friendly. Would we recommend this to anybody else - absolutely. A true boutique hotel experience that lives up to the other good reviews on this site.

We have just returned from a short break in Dubrovnik . The hotel Kazbek was without doubt one of the best hotels we have stayed in and we have stayed in numerous five star hotels . The staff were all extremely professional and friendly the bedrooms and bathrooms were both clean and beautifully furnished as was the rest of the hotel . We ate in the restaurant all 4 evenings and once again received impeccable service and delicious food . The renovation of this delightfull hotel is without doubt a resounding success the workmanship is amazing . We have never been to Croatia before but we have found it a truely lovely country and we hope to return very soon .

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2010

My wife and myself stayed at Kazbek over a weekend in June.

The hotel was smaller than we expected. Only 13 rooms on two floors. It is not in downtown but in the Dubrovnik harbor area, which is neither the poshest nor the hottest spot in town and quite far away from any restaurant or other spot, a guest of a 5-star hotel would be interested in.

The room was clean. Furniture was solid and tasteful. Free, fast WiFi internet available at the whole hotel premises. Pool (where everybody gathered after the siesta and before starting evening activities) was clean but rather small (some 8 by 10 meters). Water temperature 30 degrees. Some 30 beach chairs face the pool on 3 sides, half of them in the afternoon sun, the other half in the shade. The beach chairs are located very close to each other, restricting one's privacy.
There is no pool bar and nobody was serving drinks at the pool. It is hard to relax in such a small pool, when one is surrounded that closely by fellow guests; so taking a cool dip in the Kazbek pool is a not-so-private experience.

Staff was extraordinary helpful, competent and friendly with making reservations and arrangements. They certainly cared about us and created a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Money exchange rates and conditions were fair compared to what one would get in the city or at the airport.

Other hotel guests were very gentle, well mannered people. All of them were couples between (I guess) 35 and 60 without children.

What we did not like were a couple of very small, not too serious things:
- no breakfast buffet and no breakfast menu; you have to tell the (again very friendly and helpful) waiter what you like, and he serves any quantity you demand to your table; quality of ham- and cheese plate, egg dishes, bread and fruits did not meet our expectations in quality and freshness of products; I can easily prepare a more inspired better quality breakfast in my home with reasonably priced items from my cross-the-street supermarket. I recommend the Kazbek-people to develop either a signature breakfast, a breakfast menu or both of them and to put stronger emphasis on the quality of products they serve.
-the small number of rooms and guests as well as the remote location of the hotel (no by-passing tourists) seems to make it difficult to run the hotel restaurant and bar. It was not possible to get a cup of coffee and a tea at the terrace bar at 11 p.m. The young waiter told us "Only alcoholic drinks!", which honestly surprised us. How would they handle muslim guests? The restaurant was empty at all the evenings of our stay. Everybody seemed to prefer dining near the beautiful old town (3km away), where seeing and being seen is part of the game in the huge pedestrian zone.
-the smoke detectors in the rooms have annoying red LED lights that flash in intervals of some seconds; the TV also spots bright LEDs; it is impossible to close the curtains and/or window blinds in a way that prevents the intrusion of the significant amount of ambient light generated by the exterior lighting of the building (except maybe, when one climbs up to the rather high positioned windows and manages to mechanically re-adjust the beautiful, external, wooden, laminar blinds by himself); I am a light sensitive sleeper, so I did not sleep very well in such a light-polluted atmosphere.
-the rooms in the upper floor (room numbers 20+) are right below the roof; 50% of the ceiling is inclined; it is supported by heavy wood beams that run in a height, where it is easy to hit it with your head; this appears dangerous;
-electrical switches in the room are not labelled; switching lights on and off requires some guesswork
-air condition is noisy
-some of the power plugs in my room including the one at the small office desk were not charging my 60 Watts Apple computer power adapter, others were (as long as the keycard was in the slot next to the door)
-the flat screen TV set was mounted in an absolutely sub-optimal position. It was on the wall on the right side of the bed approximately at the latitude of my feet (so quite far away from where my head would be if I turned it into the direction of said wall). It is virtually impossible to watch TV in any comfortable position from the bed or any of the chairs in the room.Fortunately we are not interested in watching TV, but other guests might face a real disappointment.
-a fruit plate and a complementary bottle of water greeted us upon arrival; no complementary table water on the following days; empty fruit plate was left on the table and not even removed

The hotel Kazbek suited our needs, as we prefer smaller boutique style hotels with a personal touch and flawless service over 100+ bedroom mass accommodations.
There are some areas they should improve to justify the rather high price tag.

We will certainly recommend it to our friends, with the restrictive remark, that the location is somewhat in the middle of nowhere.

Dear guru10at,

We thank you for such a thorough overview about your recent stay with us.
Although according to your review we believe that in general we have met your expectations, but we would like to apologize and try to give some explanations in regards to your remarks.

We are so sorry for the fact that our hotel is smaller than you expected, but according to all other guests it should be our main advantage.

Our location is clearly explained on our website and on all online distribution systems where we are listed. Our little hotel is situated in the heart of Dubrovnik new city, which was in renaissance period chosen by Dubrovnik nobility as a privileged location for their summer residences including our hotel that dates back to 16th century.
Furthermore it is situated right on the sea front of the bay and opposite Dubrovnik commercial port where daily beautiful cruise ships and luxurious yachts dock (not a cargo port!).
Pool: we proud ourselves on the size of our pool comparing to the capacity of the hotel (almost 100 sqm/max 26 guests) and therefore we are very surprised when we saw you wrote “rather small”.
Our intention was to place our beach chairs both in the shade and in the sun so that our guests can have a choice between relaxing in the shade or enjoying the sun.
Our staff has a duty to walk around the pool every few minutes and ask our guest if they would like to place an order. We are very sorry if you had difficulties in ordering your drinks at the pool area.

Money exchange: We charge commission on official exchange rate; our commission is one of the lowest and is 1,5% only.

Breakfast: since our service is based on a personal touch, we are proud to say that we serve a la carte breakfast, which means that all of our guests can order whatever they want from our a la carte breakfast menu. We believe it is far better than to have a buffet table knowing the size of our hotel.
We guarantee the freshness of our groceries including bread and fruits. The quality of the fruits is extraordinary because our chef gets it daily on Dubrovnik green market from the producers who own small family farms in Dubrovnik surroundings.

We deeply apologize in sake of our new young waiter who told you that only alcoholic drinks could be served at 11 pm because we serve everything at any time.

The smoke detectors are a necessity and are made according to the regulations of the Croatian law.

The TV spots the bright LEDs which is normal for all modern and high quality TVs.

Our rooms on the second floor have the specially designed wooden ladders offering our guests a possibility to close the curtains and to have the full blackout in their rooms.

Our hotel is protected as a zero ground cultural monument and the height of our ceiling could not be changed from the original state. Also we do not agree it to be dangerous. The sloping ceiling with its wooden beams creates a very special and intimate atmosphere, which is highly appreciated by our guests.

All electrical switches in our rooms have an indicator, which is enough to recognize the switches in the dark.

Power plugs: the whole smart room system is of a five star standard and when the magnetic card is placed in a card holder everything is switched on and all the plugs have a power supply. Once when that card is removed everything switches off except TV and minibar.

The position of the TV set and the fact that we have LDC screens in the rooms allows the viewers to see the screen from every angle of the room.

The fruit plate is a unique and hand made by well known Dubrovnik artist and is specially designed for our hotel. Therefore when it is empty, it serves as a decoration.

We are extremely thankful for your recommendations to your friends and in regards to our location, which is explained above, we are sorry that we, and most of our guests, do not share your highly appreciated opinion.

At the end we are facing a fact that your opinion is totally opposite to all the reviews left on Tripadvisor and in our book of impressions (that can be seen on our web site) and therefore we are very much disappointed, but it gives us an additional motif to be even better than we are at the moment.
We are even more sorry knowing that any of your remarks mentioned in your review was reported neither to our staff nor to the management and if it had been a case, we could have reacted and try to solve the problems on the spot.
Once again we thank you for choosing our hotel and we hope you will give us an opportunity to serve you again if your travel plans bring you back to Dubrovnik. We would certainly try our best to provide even better service next time.

All the best,

Mato Kmetovic
