We chose Sipan for a family holiday for a quiet getaway with the option of visiting Dubrovnik.
We had a wonderful time! We stayed in a house in Sipanska Luka (House Apnea which sleeps 8), Sipanska, is the largest town on the island and is quiet and beautiful with three bar cafes and 3 restaurants. It has 2 shops, one of which is open every day and sells pretty much all you'll need for self catering other than fresh fish and the mark up is reasonable considering the lack of competition. Remember to keep the receipt if buying beer as there is a deposit on the bottles which also promotes recycling.
There is a few concrete benches by the green where one or two locals sell produce most mornings between 0730 and 1130. Olive oil, plum brandy, tomatos and veg can be bought here at reasonable prices. There is also a house that sells oil and local spirits by the church but it is more expensive but better packaged for gifts.
While this is a sleepy town with virtually no car traffic it is a stopping point for boats ranging from small Sunsail yachts to 30 passenger cruise boats. This meand that the restaurants that are normally pretty empty during the day can be fully booked in the evening. It also seemed to us that the menus and prices also reflected this so we didn't bother with these but preferred to chill out at the "No Name" cafe with free wifi and reasonable priced drinks Good iced coffee here!
We love swimming and snorkelling and there are loads of fish and even the odd octopus
You can walk to the viewpoint from Sipanska though it is best done at the cooler parts of the day, we went to watch the sunset. Wear good shoes (not the flip flops my daughter wore) and there is a steepish scramble for the last 100m or so. It takes about an hour each way.
There is a bus to Sudarad that leaves to meet the various Sudarad ferries and it costs 15 Kuna. Sudarad has a couple of restaurants, a small shop and a cafe. You can also hire bikes and canoes here for reasonable rates. We loved the cafe here with tables almost on the beach, the food and service is great and they also rent out the canoes!
Sudarad has much more ferries than Sipnska (which only has one early morning ferry to Dubrovnik in July nad August) and also has regular invasion of trip boats that deposit a crowd for 30 minutes before taking them away somewhere else, providing some amusing people watching before relaxing back into the normal peacefulness.
So day trips to Dudrovnik or morning market trips to Dubrovnik Harbour (Gruz) are easily done but I always enjoyed retruning to the calm of Sipan. Great Place.
