“Beautiful apartments and extremely knowledgeable and welcoming hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2011

Best accommodation we stayed in throughout Croatia! The hosts were happy to chat whenever we bumped into them, and were always forthcoming with dining suggestions and options for day trips. Location is amazing - right within the old town! We stayed in Apt 4 and 1 over six days. They were both extemely well laid out and made us feel very much at home. It was the perfect base from which to explore Dubrovnik. We'll definitely stay there again if we ever get a chance to go back!

Room Tip: Book early as there are only 4 rooms.

Byron called Dubrovnik "The Jewel of The Adriatic." Karmen Apartment 2, which we stayed in (3 of us) was small, beautifully formed and placed like a gem within the ring of Dubrovnik's old city.

"Never have I felt such a sense of wonder about entering a city as I (we) did as we walked across a short bridge and through a stone Gothic arch gate into this walled city. A cylindrical fort, 60ft. stone walls and shiny marble paving stones to walk on. It took us ten minutes to click over the stones dragging our cases, led by Marc, the owner of the apartment. Past the clean and shiny main street with towers at both ends, a fountain, St. Blaise's church, the Rector's Palace and one of the city's two cathedrals - all in pale cream stone - we walked as in a dream.

Marc is a class act - his decoration of his building is idiosyncratic and full of character. I think he is entered in the next olympics, representing Croatia in the "Talking Non-stop event."

We were so excited. The flat was compact and beautifully furnished with pictures or artefacts on every surface.

Seafood risotto, whitebait, fried squid and a large green salad was our first supper in a restaurant right on the quayside, three minutes walk from where we were staying. We had "chosen wisely" and ate it all up, still glowing with the fun of being there. I addressed the waiter in fluent Croatian, but strangely, he recognised I was not a native. All the five days they were warmly amused at my attempts to speak the lingo.

Marc van Bloeman is the kind of neighbour you want, unless you are the mayor. He's restless and creative and his years of work has produced a brilliant place to stay in this astounding city.

On our first trip to Dubrovnik, we knew we wanted to stay inside the Old City. Lucky for us, we booked at the Karmen Apartments.
Situated on a quiet and secluded side street, only minutes walk from Dubrovnik's historical sights, shops and restaurants, our stay in this marvelous city was enhanced by our charming, gregarious, and helpful host, Marc van Bloemen.
By email, Marc answered many of our questions which helped us finalize our travel plans. He also arranged for our pick-up at the airport, and, met us outside the city gates upon arrival. Carrying my bags, Marc served as tour guide on our walk through the city.
Though it was late October, at the end of tourist season, the only apartment available to us was #4. A bit tight for two, what we lacked in space was made up for in charm.
Marc, an avid collector of many things with stories behind each find, had filled our room with paintings on wood, canvas, and other objects( some antiques) of interest.
At the small grocery around the corner, we purchased breakfast and snack provisions. But, dinner was reserved for the wonderful restaurants which Marc suggested.
Staying at the Karmen, we felt, almost like, residents of the city. After a leisurely, late breakfast, we would set out to wander the marble streets, stopping, always, at a favorite cafe for coffee. Then, back to the Karmen for an afternoon rest and read. Later, after the crowds had vacated, we'd head out again for a quiet evening on the town.
The Karmen felt like home, warm and comfy. We recommend it highly, you won't be disappointed.

Spent a wonderful 5 days at Karmen Apartments. They are in a fantastic location within the old city and a great base to explore Dubrovnik's old city.

The owner Marc is extremely welcoming and very helpful.

I would recommend them to anyone who wishes to spend time in this beautiful city without spending huge amounts of money in a modern hotel which lacks both the charm of this beautiful old building in its pefect location and the personal attention of the owner.

This was a great place to stay and I loved being so close to everything I wanted to see. The apartment is small but set up in a great way so you don't notice it as much. Having a mini kitchen made it easy to have a inexpensive breakfast and Mark recommended some amazing places to eat. I would love to come back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dubrovnik at Karmen Apartments. We were lucky to stay one night when we arrived, and two nights at the end. The only we regret we have is not having longer. The rooms are very cozy, warm and inviting. Marc is a wonderful host and has a wealth of knowledge about Dubrovnik. We would highly recommend this apartment but would suggest you allow several days so you can get a chance to really know the people who run this establishment

I have been addicted to this part of the world since my first visit to 'communist' Tito-led Yugoslavia in 1971. I discovered Dubrovnik in the mid-70's and Marc and Silva's lovely apartments in the 1980's. Wasn't able to go during the war obviously, but was back soon after in 1995 after a memorable journey via Vienna and Sarajevo.

Dubrovnik has changed enormously in this time - it's now very busy during the long summer season, overwhelmed by cruise boat passengers during the day, with many more places to eat, the discovery of a new concept called customer service....and everyone so much more happy and relaxed. Forget any notion of it being cheap - my first long lunch for two cost £7.50 - these days, you'll pay as much as London or Berlin, with local wine being unexpectedly expensive - both in shops and restaurants.

I have always stayed in the old town - much prefer it to being outside the walls - and staying in Karmen is just perfect. Great location, very helpful hosts, huge choice of books and guides, and individually decorated apartments - with the food market no more than three hundred yards away. Given the turnover of restaurants, my first update from Marc is always where's good to eat this year.

Two outstanding features of all the apartments - apart from their charming Bohemian decor - are huge comfortable double beds, and great power showers. Stay anywhere else in a private apartment in the Old Town, and you'll probably miss both! And being 6 foot 3, I speak from painful experience.

There's nowhere better to stay in the Old Town - so dig deep and book early. Marc and Silva have lots of repeat visitors, some booking years in advance.
