We showed up unbooked and unannounced, and the amazing Nicola not only welcomed us with open arms, maps, recommendations on where to go/eat/walk, he also gave us the best apartment in the Garden complex - and they weren't even open! He is truly a good heart. We had a huge, beautifully furnished, fully equipped, modern apartment in a centuries-old stone house, with a balcony, TV, kitchen, luxurious bathroom, the works for an amazingly reasonable price. Although it was winter, you could see how lush and beautiful the surrounding garden will be when it warms up. They're doing all kinds of fixing-up, too, like putting in a barbeque area for guests. The location is perfect - not in the Old City as other reviews have said, but just 5 mins away, in the old section called Vila Varos, on the slopes of the Marjan Hill. Also nearby are parks, the wooded Hill itself, cafes, great restaurants with local fare. You can see the harbor. Nicola is a fountain of information and knowledge, and could not be more accomodating and kind. There are multiple apartments, rooms and delightful cottages within this private family compound (we got a tour and they all look excellent), and he has more in other areas of Split. Word of mouth and devoted returning guests book him up pretty early in season, so do call ahead - not like us! There is no doubt where we will stay when we return to Split. What a find!
