“A Star...“Simply outstanding!””
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013

This was my second visit to Split but my first stay at the Hotel Slavija. I was overwhelmed with the level of service and the quality of the room. It is the 3 star hotel but I have visited 3 star hotels in Europe and this is far more than just 3 stars Hotel.

The room has an understated elegance that is unparalleled in any hotel I have stayed in. The decor is thoughtfully soothing with the perfect color. The bed was sumptuously made and dreamy to fall into each evening.

The concierge and all staff we encountered were gracious and helpful. Helped with information regarding their town, we would miss so many nice things withouth their help.

My doughter is traveling with her friend next summer in Split, and already made a reservation for them, This is how impressed I am with this Hotel.

Room Tip: Just talk to the staff on the reception or manager, she will be a great help

We stayed here before (2 nights) and after (1 night) our Hvar excursion and thoroughly enjoyed it. Customer service was excellent before we even arrived and throughout our entire stay. From arranging private airport transportation to purchasing ferry tickets early in the morning so we could sleep in to the hotel staff, everything/everyone was fantastic (especially Mirjana).

We did the walking tour with Mirjana who was absolutely fantastic! She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the palace and Croatia, which we loved about her. Just so you understand, we are NOT a walking tour/museum type of family (we actually booked our week in Croatia as "beach time"). Even our 15 year old son enjoyed the tour (that says A LOT!)

The rooms were great; very spacious and clean. Once you know the history of the palace, the hotel is even cooler.

The location is fantastic; close to many restaurants, beach & ferry terminal.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Split I highly recommend it AND don't forgot to take the walking tour with Mirjana!

This hotel is in the heart of the old city. While visiting we learned that it is the oldest hotel in Split with some construction dating to the 12th century. The interior is completely renovated with all the latest comforts and amenities. The key advantage to staying in the old city is that the ambiance and all the restaurants are just a short walk. The challenge to being in the old city is that the hotel is difficult to find and not accessible by car. Getting there involves schlepping luggage 200 yards/meters and climbing a dozen or so steps. Best to have someone who knows how to navigate the labyrinth lead the way for you.

Once inside the hotel, the front desk was very helpful with excellent English. Staff said hello whenever we passed them in the hallways. The included breakfast offered considerably more than simple continental but less than the lavish buffet of a large resort. We stayed twice, two nights apart and the hotel was happy to keep some of our unneeded luggage those two nights.

The first night we had a standard room on the first floor. It was on the small-ish side which made for some fancy dancing around to get our bags sorted and repacked. We chose to enjoy the fresh night air by leaving our windows open rather than using the air conditioning. Guests should be aware that the noise of adjacent city cafes continues to 11PM and later. The second night we had a larger room on the third floor with a nice private porch. The café noise was present on the 3rd floor as well and we chose the air conditioner.

We enjoyed comfortable beds and wireless internet that worked quite well. And if we were to return again to Split we would definitely choose the Hotel Slavija once again.

Get detailed directions to get here because it's difficult to find. Thankfully, everyone in Croatia is super helpful. My husband and I just returned from 10 days in Croatia and I had found Hotel Slavija on Trip Advisor. We didn't have reservations but THANKFULLY they had a room available. We even had our own terrace! The hotel was super modern with air conditioning, comfy beds and a nice breakfast in the morning ( included with room). The manager even helped us find a place to stay in Dubrovnik (our next destination) and gave us lots of tips of things to see along the way. Great hotel!!

We arrived by bus and GPS had a heart attack, chose the wrong gate to enter the Diocletian palace to find Hotel Slavija, and we climbed an unnecessary million steps (The Hotel is very easy to find, take the second main gate!) We then missed the half step into the foyer, and she fell flat on her face into the foyer. That was our introduction to the angel at the desk, Mirjana, who was horrified and regarded this as somehow her fault! Mirjana will be one of the friendliest, helpful people you will find in Croatia! As well as Mirjana, there is the ever smiling Robert, also a fountain of knowledge on Croatian history, and a master of all things ipad, ipod and iphone, wifi and computers! The hotel does not have a lift, but the ever helpful staff carry your bag anyway. The decor of the hotel is modern and fresh. We had a balcony room, which was spacious, clean, including the modern bathroom. The deck was HUGE, and gave views over the rooftops. We found the rooms quiet, even overlooking the nightlife. A balcony room entitles you to delivered breakfast, a tasty treat. The Hotel is perfectly placed in the Diocletian Palace, minutes from the promenade, restaurants, cash machine! If you are taking the coastal cruise (if not you should!) the Hotel will store your excess baggage. When we returned from ours, we were greeted like old friends. Immediately at the door is Cafe Figa, one of the best in Split, great coffee, food, drinks, and service with a smile. We absolutely recommend this Hotel, it ticks all the boxes, and thanks again to the brilliant staff!

We stayed in this hotel and were very pleased with it overall. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The hotel is well located and the reception staff were extremely helpful in helping us secure out tickets for the boat to Hvar. They sent someone to get our tickets at 7am for the days ferry without any extra charge. Over and above helpful service in my opinion.

It was a bit noisy at night but not enough to prevent a good nights sleep. Very impressed with this hotel and would stay here again.

Room Tip: get a room away from the main street

We were on a small group tour and did not know ahead of time which hotel we would stay at in Split. At the same time, we knew that some hotels here are located within Diocletian’s Palace, a 4th-century UNESCO-protected cultural monument. Imagine our surprise and delight when our guide led us to Hotel Slavija, a modern establishment tucked right into the walls of this 1700-year-old Roman ruin! The location is outstanding, being right in the centre of Split’s most famous landmark, near the Roman Mausoleum and Temple of Jupiter. Outside the Palace walls, you are just a few metres from the Riva, Split’s attractive waterfront promenade.

Both our rooms were a very generous size, each with beds for three. While the fixtures, bedding and decor are ultra-modern, the walls in some rooms have been finished to reveal the (seemingly?) original stones and bricks. Super-fast wifi is included in the rooms and was a treat after several days of slow connections at other venues. Bathrooms are a good size and well stocked with the usual amenities including a better-than-average blow dryer. Breakfast is served in a relatively small room just beyond the reception desk. It is primarily a continental breakfast, with fewer hot foods than we’ve seen at other venues in Croatia. We hope to return to Split and will definitely stay again at Hotel Slavija.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Slavija is type of a heritage hotel due to its location, history and protection by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and UNESCO. The Diocletian's Palace was built in the middle of the 3rd century AD, while the Hotel Slavija was built inside its walls, above the Emperor's western baths. Therefore, it can be concluded that the building of the hotel influenced the protection of the Baths from the devastation. With time the building of the hotel expanded, and from the Baroque palace it became today's Hotel Slavija. Hotel Slavija is under the protection of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and in part is protected by the UNESCO. The location in the very center of the town makes Hotel Slavija an ideal choice for a stay in Split, surrounded by all relevant historical buildings of the city of Split, including the Temple of Jupiter, the St. Duje Cathedral, the Milesi palace... It is ideal place for both business and pleasure travelers because of its location. Hotel is situated in the very center of the city and is but a few minutes walk from all the major attractions as well as from the main bus terminal, airport shuttle terminal, railway station and ferry. The hotel has 25 rooms and each room is air conditioned, with private bath, hair dryer, satellite TV, Internet connection and direct dial telephone. Some of the rooms are with terraces and Hotel is especially proud to present them because, terraces are rarity in the old part of Split. In the lobby of the hotel is Internet Hot spot, which is free for hotel guests. We also provide faxing, copying, printing and scanning, as well as laundry service. ... more   less
