“Absolutely Don't Miss!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2013

For all visitors to Split, the museum is a don't miss proposition. The museum is located in his house overlooking the Adriatic with excellent views of the offshore islands. It's a walk from the harbor (15 minutes or so) or a short taxi ride. Mestrovic is the most famous Croatian sculpter and did the American Indian sculptures in Chicago's Grant Park. As with Rodin, the hands are emphasized in many of his works on exhibit. Those there are representative of his work throughout the years, including the time he spent in America. Also included in the admisssion is the family chapel with his stations of the cross and the central crucifix. Quite a value for a few kuna.

“Mystery Museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

The museum is the house where Mestrovic lived and is located with a wonderful view to the sea. The sculptures themselves are interesting -- sensuous and at times violent, melancholy and agonizing. The mystery part about this museum is the total lack on information on the exhibition floor. It is as if they don't expect anybody to be terribly interested in Mestrovic's art. Probably should read up on him before going.

“Great Art in an even greater Gallery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

We heard about the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery through the One Penny Split Walking Tour on which the Gallery was very recommended as a hidden gem of Split. We're very interested in art but don't have formal knowledge about it and so very spontaneously decided to visit the gallery. It was a really interesting experience!

The sculptures are between naturalistic and abstract art and they are really fascinating. But the gallery's highlight is not only the art but very much the place itself. The Gallery is in Mestrovic's old summer villa, directly at the sea, and with a great garden. Walking through garden and villa was a great experience! The Kastel Church which Mestrovic renovated and decorated is about 500 m away. Like the gallery the building and the garden (an olive plantation) are at least equal to the art.

Our only problem with the place was that there weren't any explanations or interpretation for the art, or at least not in English, and so we stood relatively clueless in front of the most sculptures. It would be nice to have some sort of guide or map of the gallery in English with some interpretation tips for the scultures etc. Perhaps it helps to read beforehand some informations about Mestrovic and his art. But even without deeper knowledge it was a great experience!

We would recommend to have a walk from the city centre along the sea or through Marjan Park, or if the weather doesn't allow it (or you don't want do walk :-)) it's very easy to go there by bus from St. Francis Church at the Rva.

“pretty site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Beautiful sculpture in a very pretty setting. If you are on foot, it is a mild walk from the harbor area, and pleasant to do along the beach. it's not a huge collection of sculptures, but they are very lovely. There's a nice liltle cafe there for a coffee or drink after your visit as well.
