“Last Minute Stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed at Hotel Kharkiv for 2 nights and it was a walk-in. We were glad the front desk spoke English; not fluently. The room was an average size, but there was no coffee maker in the room. It would have been nice to have it in the room. The other thing we weren’t happy about was the lack of items on the breakfast menu. Everything else was okay during our stay.

The hotel is very centrally located. It is in five-minute walk to the Kharkiv national university, in three minute walk to the nearest metro station, in five minute walk to the central square Svoboda, in 10 minutes walk to the central park. Rooms are very modest in furniture, but not small. Half of rooms have windows to the yard inside, so there is no noise from the streets. Breakfast is good.
There is a restaurant for dinner. There is an economical variant with a low price to stay in the hotel.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012 via mobile

I was there over December 2011 and I can truthfully say that this Hotel is one of the better hotels in Kharkov. The hotel assistants spoke English and were friendly which made a nice change. They could do to improve the breakfast menu, but it seems standard in Ukraine to keep this an unlavish affair.

Room was fine -- quite spacious and warm, even with the temperature -20 deg celsius outside, shower and toilet were good. Lobby was impressive, modern decor, staff spoke english but not fluently. they were reasonably friendly. no tea/coffee facilities in room but i have seen had this before in western hotels. location good -- kharkov is not too impressive but the hotel was very close to the city centre.
Big let down was the breakfast -- this was a relatively cheap hotel (I paid 40 GBP per night) so i wasn't expecting much but only to have the choice of two boiled frankfurters or three baked eggs (not both) was not good. also, to be allowed only one glass of orange juice and one small cup of black coffee was something of an insult. the breakfast room itself was rather cold and scruffy.
nevertheless, i would use the hotel again.

Made the mistake of arriving in Kharkov without a booking. I came from a village with no Internet access. Turned up to my first choice Chichkov Hotel but they were booked out. They called the Kharkov hotel for me and quoted 1359 UAH which is way overpriced. The room was spacious, but very, very tacky. You could see how they wanted to impress their Soviet clients, but it fell way short by western standards. Only a 3 star hotel at best. Hated the decor, with Marilyn Monroe painting. Only good thing about the hotel was the location. Nice and close to the main square. Would not stay here again.

Room Tip: book first, and get a better rate somewhere else

I've just checked out of this hotel after 2 nights on business. I was on the 14th floor in a very basic room, not even provided with tea/coffee making facilities in the room which I've never experienced before. The vertical blind had slats missing so all night I could see the golden Arches of Macdonalds down the street, luckily being so high up in the hotel, I don't think I was overlooked! The hotel is situated on a busy junction where traffic only realy dies down for a few hours in the middle of the night. The corridors are not carpeted so you hear every footstep quite amplified as they pass your room so if you want a restful stay, this isn't the hotel for you. The reception area is quite impressive and staff do their best to understand you and attempt friendliness. I was told the restaurant was on the 8th floor, I also clarified this. Food and service in this restaurant is extremely basic too. It wasn't until I checked out this morning that I saw a restaurant on the ground floor which looked much more inviting. Unfortunately as I opted out of breakfast this morning (after being served cucumber and salami for breakfast yesterday), I didn't have time to check the other restaurant out - shame I wasn't told about it! Am glad to be sat at the airport as I write this heading home to civilisation.
