“Made memorable by Eisenstein”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

The steps are a wonderful architectural design so standing at the top or bottom they seem to be one long progression of steps. Eisenstein used them quite dramatically in his episodic movie "The Battleship Potemkin". Despite the fact that the incident he portrayed there took place at a nearby but less scenic location, they are worth going to see and enjoy as a unique landmark. Oh, and try to see the movie if you haven't already!

“Beware of Men with Birds of Prey on the Potemkin Steps”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

We had been warned about the men carrying the birds of prey on the Potemkin Steps. I witnessed a couple that posed with the birds and then got in an argument about payment. One con they have is to offer to use your camera for the picture and demand an exorbitant amount for the return of the camera.
The funicular that lets you bypass the steps costs about a quarter, but you do need Ukrainian money.

“Optical Illusion Stairs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

These are an interesting example of an optical illusion. When you are the bottom of the steps you see only the steps, when you are at the top you see only the broad landings between the steps. The steps are wider at the top than the bottom giving the illusion of greater height. Once you have climbed the 192 steps take a stroll on Primorsky Boulevard at the top and start exploring the city from there. If you don’t feel like climbing the stairs there is funicular on the left hand side (if you are at the bottom of the stairs) that charges a small fee. Note that the fee is payable in the local currency only, they will not accept Euros or dollars.

“Easy steps!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Great views from both the top and bottom of these steps. Always very busy. If you cannot manage these steps, there is a small cable car on the left., for a small fee.

“Battleship Potemkin”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

I always wanted to visit Odessa and to see Potemkin Steps because of that famous scene from Battleship Potemkin. I did and i have to say that in life they're not impressive at all.
