“The Perfect Antigua Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2010

The location of this hotel and the graciousness of the staff make this a very special hotel. Family owned and operated, you truly get the Antigua experience staying here. It is located in the center of all activity...shops and restaurants. The Meson de Maria is just a block from the central plaza. In this area you will find people out late in the evening walking from restaurants and small clubs and enjoying strolling the cobblestone streets. Thirty years ago we lived in Antigua for two years...we cannot return often enough...and, when we do...it is to the Meson de Maria that we find that special ambiance that is Antigua. Everyone should experience Antigua...it is a bucket list must!

We just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel. The location cannot be beat (1 1/2 blocks from the Central Plaza. The staff is wonderful and friendly. Got a deluxe queen room upstairs for a discounted price. Small room but quiet, comfortable and great water pressure. Had all the typical amenities, safe, free water, flat screen tv, nice comfortable bed. No hairdryers in the room so ask and they will bring it. The breakfast was good and the courtyard is beautiful and relaxing (so is the roof). Would definitely stay at this hotel again and recommend it to anyone who wants to be in a great location in Antigua. For the price I paid, I was very happy with the hotel. I do agree that Antigua is overpriced in general.

Many times I have traveled to Central America, I always get tired of the hotels being to Marriott type. I knew hotels in Antigua were different and were going to offer me a little more comfort for my stay. But I never expected the amazing service, quality and staff service ever. I felt pampered since the day I wrote my email request, to the day I got on my shuttle to return home. I was delighted to stay in Mesón de María, and I am happy to make a review for such a charming hotel. I recommend the deluxe suites if you visit. I see that people complain about the price, but come on, it´s Antigua Guatemala!! This hotel is not only close to everything, but also quiet and relaxing. The terrace was my everyday morning ritual. The view from the hotel is a spectacular site to see and visit. Two thumbs up for this hotel. Loved it and I am definitely coming back.

Good location in Antigua with nice courtyard and rooftop and a good breakfast.

We had a slightly odd experience in check-in - they didn't have our key and other guests had stuff in the safe. But I think that was pretty random, and not typical of the hotel.

Downstairs rooms (we saw 2) smell damp, so follow Lonely Planet's advice and go upstairs. The upstairs room we stayed in was pleasant and peaceful with a nice bathroom, but over-priced compared with the rest of Antigua/Guatemala.

We stayed at Hotel Meson de Maria for 3 nights in late October, which was our first trip to Guatemala, and loved this hotel.

The rooms are small by American standards, but not atypical for Antigua. We got a deluxe queen on the 2nd floor, which was very clean. Hot water in the shower came and went, but I believe this is typical for Antigua as well. No A/C, but given the cool Antigua nights, this wasn't a problem as we found it a bit chilly at times.

Hotel gives you 2 free bottles of water per day, which was greatly appreciated, since tap water in Guatemala is not safe to drink.

The included breakfasts were delicious (especially the local coffee). We tried the "typico" and the American syle breakfast, which were both very good.

The staff were outstanding in every way. They arranged a private shuttle for us to and from the airport, and were very helpful with recommendations and catering to our every need. (The desk staff also speak very good English).

The hotel was beautiful, with plenty of sitting areas to enjoy the cool mountain air and a bottle of wine. The roof deck was amazing for just relaxing and taking in the view of the surrounding mountains and volcanos.

Perhaps the best part of this hotel is the location, just one block from the central plaza, and just around the corner from any number of restaurants and shops. We ate dinner one night at Panza Verde, which was also gorgeous, but would still have picked Meson de Maria over Panza Verde because of the perfect location of Meson de Maria.

We would definitely come back.

Gracious hospitality seems to be standard operating procedure at this hotel which is only about 2 blocks from the center of town (so a great location for seeing Antigua). We arrived at 6:30AM expecting the usual "check-in is at 3PM" speeech. Instead, they set us up with coffee/tea and asked if we could wait 30 minutes until housekeeping arrived. We were in our room by 8AM (eating breakfast in the mean time). When they thought we might miss breakfast they told our shuttle driver to wait while they packed food to go (most places would apologize and wish you a nice day). Needless to say, we would go back.

The rooms vary in size by are small by US hotel standards. But this is a vacation spot so hopefully room size is not a big factor for you. Houskeeping kept the room clean and in great shape. Because the buildings in town generally face a central courtyard the rooms are also insulated from street noise- a big factor in a cobblestone town wiht lots of bus traffic.

The hotel offers some of the nice to have features that often go missing when traveling in smaller cities: in-room safe, free bottle water each day, good cable TV, free internet access and, oh, very nice towels. It suffered from the same problem as every Guatemalan hotel we stayed in - poor water pressure in the shower and a challenge managing the mix of hot/cold water. Afeter staying in 4 hotels with the same issue, this may just be a fact of life right now.

Breakfast was outside our door in the courtyard (on nice days) or in their little dining room otherwise. This would make having a room away from the courtyard a plus unless you plan to get up when breakfast starts at 7AM (and we did most mornings). The breakfast was very nice with eggs, pancakes, and fresh bread plus juice, coffee/tea - the basics- but all very well done.

We were very happy overall and would highly recommend the hotel to anyone (except those wanting large rooms, of course).

  • Liked — The staff- nothing was an issue for them.
  • Disliked — Room facing the courtyard meant noise from the breakfast guests starting at 6:30-7AM
