“Can't understand the hype!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

This hostel has nothing special to offer. Ok, the indoor area is nice. But you wait for ages before the receptionist serves you. And if so she doesn't know what she does. We booked a dorm, but they didn't even have a key for this room. So if one of your roommates closes the door from inside you will spend the night wherever, but not in your bed. The bunks are quite big, but very uncomfortable. One of the few hostels where you don't get a towel. Could be a really nice place, but service is really bad.

I spent 4 nights in "Zoola" Antigua.

Pros:
+ The place is prettier than you can see in the pictures
+ the showers have a big shower head and we had hot water most of the time
+ the place is always clean
+ main area is big and comfortable
+ rooms are big and equipped with lockers
+ food is great!!

Cons:
- loud and rude music even in the morning and on our friday night dinner
- thin mattress.
- private rooms are very basic. Too basic

Zoola is very cheap and affordable, but the rooms were solid for our weekend stays in Antigua. The hostel is also less than 2 blocks for the city center. Excellent place to stay for a couple of days! I also liked the ambiance. The place had lot of travelers around and great music. I had a lot of fun there, great management, clean place, worth the money!

We booked Zoola for Semana Santa 3 months beforehand due to the craziness of that week in Antigua. And because of this craziness, we were unable to check out of Zoola (unless we left Antigua - which we didn't want to do, but came very close...) We did check out early though (paying a percentage of the room rate despite giving them 2 days notice) and we paid more at another hostel - all worth it just to get out of there. It is the most unwelcoming establishment I have ever stayed in. By a really long stretch. In their defence, the main two people who seem to run the place were friendly enough, but the rest of the staff were not. It is such a strange place - used predominantly by Israelis who just have no interest engaging with anyone else (we have never found this with individuals, but this may be because most people here are Israeli?). We felt like total outsiders and just not welcome - nobody would even look us in the eye, let alone respond to an 'hello/hola'. The hostel probably had the best facilities of any hostel we had stayed in up to that point - the showers were great and clean. The breakfast was good. The private room was clean and perfectly formed (bed was very hard though). We began to think we were getting paranoid though - three times random people walked into our room and just stood there. There was a socket outside thge room, so people generally hung around outside the door. On top of that there was a smoking/TV room directly above our room on the roof - apparently this was supposed to shut down at 11. This never happened. The noise was incredible and it sounded like riverdance was going on above us til all hours (not helped by fact that the wooden floor and our ceiling were one and the same). Also, we were getting high for free due to the type of smoking that was going on in the smoking room - seriously, our room was knockout every night. It is difficult to rate this place - I'd rate it for facilities. You may think I am being harsh as most of the problems appear to be with other guests, but the hostel fostered this IMO. One final thing - this is the only hostel which have held on to my passport for the duration of my stay - I wasn't comfortable with this at all and when we were leaving the manager said that she had already given back the passport (as she couldn't find it). My husband reminded her where she'd put it (in a special box with the only other non-Israeli passport...). No apology though.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 5 unless you want smoke haze and lots of noise...

I liked the ambiance! many backpackers around and good music. A little far away tho'.
There is also a terrace to hang out. The decoration was really nice too.
If you are looking for a cheap place to stay this is a great option.

I had a lot of fun there, great management, clean place, worth the money! P.S the food is very good! Check the menu! The location is a bit far from the center, but the management will order you taxi, so don't worry.

We arrived in Antigua to find that our pre-booked accommodation at Hotel Dionisio had been cancelled by the hotel as we did not arrive before 1pm. Our booking was previously confirmed and I had advised in my booking that we will arrive by shuttle bus from El Salvador at 8pm.

We were without accommodation at 8pm and had arrived in a very busy city. Our shuttle bus driver took us to Zoola Hostel where we took a dorm room for the night as all private rooms were booked out. The management and staff at Zoola have been very kind and understanding of our situation. We had a very comfortable night and had very clean shared showers and toilets. The whole place is very well run and we were served a great dinner and an amazing breakfast.

I would highly recommend Zoola to anyone looking for a Hostel in Antigua.

Room Tip: Dorms are very spacious and comfortable.
