I was looking for the perfect place to ask my girlfriend to be my wife, after considering plenty of choices a good friend of mine told me that Lions Inn was offering a romantic package that consisted in a romantic dinner and one night at the wonderful master suite, so I called and arranged everything. Dinner was great, but the entire place is wonderful, with an exquisite taste in decoration, and marvelous attention to every single detail, the service was way above our expectations, we had dinner in the terrace with a stunning view to the Agua volcano and just the greatest atmosphere. Following our amazing dinner we went into the most wonderful suite I’ve ever been to, decorated with rose petals, candles and a bottle of champagne. In the morning we had the best breakfast we’ve had in the most magical place in Antigua Guatemala. I wish we could have stayed for longer, but we’ll be back for our honeymoon!!! Looking forward to our next visit!!

Booking the hotel was so easy and friendly (the hotel called me as I did not want to provide my credit card number via email) that I was certain that our stay would be just as easy. After confirming our reservation directly with them (and confirming that we were in the $285US per night master suite) we arrived at the hotel only to find that they had given our room away to another couple. This was after the transportation that we had paid them for never arrived at the airport to take us to the hotel. After having us wait two hours in the 40F lobby, we were taken to our promised room and brought the worst two bowls of soup and sandwiches. We were instructed to leave our dishes on the desk and that they would get them in the morning.

The bedroom itself was large and beautiful, but the white duvet cover had stains on it and the jacuzzi tub needed a good scrubbing of all the grout between the tiles.

The following morning, we didn't eat breakfast there figuring that it would be as bad as dinner. We left at 8 a.m. and returned at 6 p.m. to find that our room hadn't been cleaned. Bowls of crusty soup and half-eaten sandwiches were sitting right where they were left the night before. The shades were drawn, the bed unmade, our towels where we had left them. The staff were very unwilling to come clean the room when my husband called down to the lobby. In fact, every time we called the front desk, no one answered. The only way to get someone to answer was to call the kitchen. After an argument about the need for the room to be cleaned every day (especially if food is in it), we told them that we were going out for dinner and needed it clean by the time we got back.

The next day was our last day so we decided to save time by eating at the hotel. Breakfast was amazing...banana crepes with an orange sauce as well as other options. The hotel itself was beautiful. Amazing furniture, colors, gardens, reflecting pools, decor, a roof-top patio, rooms with floor to ceiling windows opening up onto private balconies.

When evening came and it was time to leave, timing was everything. Guatemala City was an hour away. Our flight was at eight. We arranged for transport through the hotel at 5. By 6:30, that transport still hadn't arrived and the hotel had kept saying "five more minutes". At 6:45, a cab happened to drop someone off at the hotel and he agreed to take us to the airport. The hotel wouldn't exchange our travelers checks for us so that we could pay him to take us to the airport and yelled at us for taking this guy's cab saying "It'll be just five more minutes". My husband finally yelled at her that she had been saying five more minutes for almost two hours. If this cabby hadn't arrived, we wouldn't have made it to the airport in time to catch our flight due to the terrible coordination of transportation by the Lions Inn. As it was, we only had 20 minutes to get to our gate.

If this hotel undergoes a serious management change, I would reconsider revisiting due to the beauty of the property itself. Beauty can't compensate for abysmal service and at $285 a night I expect much better service than they had to offer. It was as if we were staying in a hostel.

I was only here for one night but wish I could have stayed longer. Antigua is a wonderful town with lots to see and do in the area. The Lions Inn is walking distance to almost anything in the town but located on a quiet street a few blocks from the busy streets of the downtown. The courtyard is beautiful and the staff could not be more helpful. I looked at many places to stay and think this is one of the nicest available in Antigua. The master suite is worth the extra money although all the rooms are nice.

Although we ended up spending alot more money than we had planned for, we were not disappointed with the Lion's Inn. The room was great and the staff were super friendly and accomodating. They even went to change our dollars for us at the bank so we would not have to wait in line!! The breakfast was a bit disappointing (and it was not included in the room!) but overall we were very happy with this hotel.

  • Liked — The architecture, the friendly staff, peace and quiet.
  • Disliked — It was a bit overpriced and they just need to tweak things a bit to be more informative to the client.

Arriving at the Posada de los Leones (The Lion´s Inn), you will marvel at its wonderful setting among the shady trees of a coffee plantation, evoking a time when life was quiet and more gracious. The faint smell of the coffee flower permeates the pure mountain air. You are surrounded by many-colored bougainvillea, tropical ferns and exuberant flowers that flourish in this eternal spring-like climate.
At night, the inn is illuminated by hundreds of candles like in centuries past when Spanish conquistadors discovered this lush valley and founded the City of St. James of the Knights, now known as Antigua Guatemala, a colonial marvel of imposing architecture, quaint cobblestone streets and elegant colonial homes surrounded by green hills and coffee plantations.

The inn´s Spanish-Moorish architecture with a flowered central patio, cool corridors, tropical gardens, and elegantly furnished rooms dates back to the first inhabitants of Antigua who recreated the mansions of Andalucía in their new homeland. From the second floor terrace, one enjoys a great view of the plantations and the wooded hills surrounding Antigua, while enjoying a sumptuous Guatemalan breakfast.
The spacious lounge and elegant salon, as well as the well-stocked multilingual library are yours to enjoy. The rustle of fountains in the two exuberant gardens and the vibrant Guatemalan textiles that accent the high ceiling-ed rooms will put you in the mood for exploring more of the jewel that is Antigua.

Each of the six spacious rooms and suites features one queen or two twin beds, a cozy fireplace, a large bathroom in the Moorish style, lovely handmade wooden furniture and local artwork. In line with their Moorish heritage they are called Poesia, Jasmin, Sherazad, Zahar, and Magia. French windows open on to your private furnished garden terrace. Elegant appointments and attention to detail make these rooms some of Central America’s finest. A fine blend of antique European and Latin American furniture, paintings and sculptures throughout and unrivaled personal attention will make your stay a memorable experience.
