“Best hotel ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2007

The Meson Panza Verde is officially my favourite hotel in the world.
We stayed there with my parents (who were returning for the 4th time) for Christmas '06 and had a fantastic stay.
The staff were attentive and helpful (thank you Lucy, Ingrid and Blanca), breakfast is plentiful and delicious and the rooms are gorgeous. My parents stayed in Room 8 which is stunning - huge bed, big fireplace, private courtyard, enormous bathroom with a mosaic tiled bath - we were in Room 3 which is smaller but has a courtyard area at the back and opens onto the main courtyard.
The gardens are luscious and the roof gardens, with views of Agua and Fuego volcanoes, are magical. And the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon.
The restaurant's head chef is from Switzerland but had been in Antigua for 10 years and had travelled the world so he comes up with delicious international flavours and I highly recommend eating there. The only odd note was the curry flavouring on the Christmas Day turkey. There's also a decent wine list - quite hard to find in Guatemala.
I can't wait to go back and highly recommend staying here!

My husband and I spent three nights of our honeymoon in Suite 7 at Meson Panza Verde. The property is gorgeous, extremely well-kept and clean, beautiful details. The grounds themselves feel like a piece of art, and we, among the lucky few, blessed to be able to glide through.
Our room had a large veranda with views of the volcano to the left, visible mostly in the mornings, as in the afternoons the cloud cover ate up the view. We had an adobe fireplace, a king sized bed, and a large jacuzzi tub for two. Truly an indulgence, and perfect for a honeymoon.
Be prepared to walk a lot in Antigua. Meson Panza Verde is a bit off the beaten path, around 4 long blocks to the central park. But if you are seeking privacy, and a beautiful spot to relax, Panza Verde is for you.
My only two complaints were the staff and the complementary breakfast. The breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. The banana muffins were stale and dry, the fruit mushy at times, hard as rocks fried plantains, and there was a general lack of variety. This was surprising coming from such a highly ranked restaurant.
Also, the staff were so hands off, that I wondered if they even existed. It's clear from our treatment there, that the main focus of Meson Panza Verde is the restaurant and not the B&B. We spoke with the manager of the restaurant quite a few times, but I'm not sure if we ever spoke to the person in charge of the B&B. This would have helped us greatly considering we had some problems with flights, and our arrival time had to be pushed back considerably because of that. We were never given a tour of the property so were forced to figure it out on our own. Plus, since we were there on a Sunday and Monday, the place basically shuts down, and it felt like we were the only guests at times. There are of course, good things, and bad things about that. It would have been nice to get some advice about exploring the town, and other restaurants to try. (Go to La Escudilla with Riki's Bar attached - VERY fun night).
Bottomline - if you want a gorgeous and romantic escape, and are naturally adventurous, and don't mind branching out on your own, stay at Meson Panza Verde.

Stayed here for 1 night in June 2006. This hotel is located on the 5ave - away from the noise and hustle and bustle of Central Park. As requested - we were able to check in early. The original room we requested was under renovations - however was offered the Grand Suite (#12) for the night at the same price of the other smaller room.

If you can get this suite - please do so - quiet, beautiful and charming. Beautiful room, furniture, bathroom for a queen.

Only one concern was the live music that is played in the evenings. Our room was pretty much on top of the restaurant/lounge and were able to hear everyone downstairs have a great time - but the music ends at a descent hour.

Highly recommended!

I agree that this hotel is okay - great at times and terrible at others.

First, they messed up our room allocation, where I was given that grand suite and my friend the standard as the check-in staff could not speak english at all. The next day, the english speaking staff told me about the mix up and left it to me to explain to my friend, who was very gracious about it all.

Second, the restaurtant noise really is intrusiuve. Fortunately, I had sleeping pills to get me through it.

Third, the restaurant is not open Sunday evenings and Mondays. Good if you are trying to sleep.

Fourth, there was no staff around at times to help us plan our day or sort out issues.

Otherwise, a beautiful old house, very quiet during the day, big grand suite but bathroom "window" was next to people dining. Poor things having to listen to me do my toilette.

From the moment we stepped into the rose filled courtyard until checkout time 7 days later we were totally charmed. By our suite, by the staff, by the wonderful food in the restaurant around the pool. We stayed in Suite 4 which is downstairs but tucked in a corner away from the sounds of the people enjoying lunch and dinner right outside our door (thick walls made everyone magically dissappear when the door was closed). The suite was the size of a small apartment with an ample sized very comfortable living room with french doors opening onto our very private orchid filled garden patio, a gracious sized bedroom with 2 standard beds and a huge window that cranked open for another wonderful view of the patio and a giant bathroom with a large shower that had beautiful red fresh beauganvilla scattered across the bottom when I stepped in on the first night. It will be hard to choose between drinks on your private patio, or in the intimate bar, or on the roof overlooking a view you cannot believe is real or in the piano bar with Salsa music extrordinaire (the leader is a real live member of the "Buena Vista Social Club" band - don't know them? - pick up a CD before you leave home to get in the mood!) We looked at all of the larger suites upstairs before leaving and each suite was more opulent than the one we just looked at. I cannot wait to go back. There is an art gallery on the rooftop and fresh roses and lilies of every color in pots and vases all over the hotel - indoors and out. Free breakfast every morning with fantastic coffee, "tamales", cakes and fresh fruit. You will be spoiled and loving it. AND most amazing of all - how did those charming, giggling ladies who are tidying up everywhere carry those huge pitchers of water on their heads?? Practice your Buenes Tardes and Buenes Dias because everyone greets you with a big smile and a lovely wish for a beautiful and happy day - which is exactly what you will have. Enjoy

Our family of four shared the grand suite and couldnt have been more pleased. The room was stunningly beautiful and ultimately comfortable. We did hear music from the restaurant below until 10:30 or so, but it was the Buena Vista Social Club - what an amazing treat!! The restaurant was excellent including a nice breakfast, the rooftop garden a delight and they even offer yoga classes. We toured the Santa Domingo and while it is admitedly quite beautiful,it felt stuffy and touristy.
