“Short steep climb; worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

This is easily done in half a day (transport from Antigua, included). I have been twice, both times with Old Town Outfitters and I cannot recommend them enough - their guides are professional, conversational, interesting and encouraging. What's not to like about that?

The hike got me huffing and puffing, and most people will be able to make it up. One of the funny things about the first half of the hike is that locals on horses will literally follow you up that first (and steepest part) waiting for you to "cave" and buy the horse ride! Hearing the sound of horse hooves and the occasional snort behind me made me feel that I was being followed by a HEARSE, waiting for their chance to haul my cold, dead body off the mountain...for a fee!

At the top of the lava field, David and other very cool artisans have created the Lava Store that sells lava-based jewelry as a social enterprise. He's great to talk to.

Bring a ham and cheese sandwich to cook-up in some of the "lava ovens" that exist there.

Fun trip.

“A majestic sentinel overlooking the city of Antigua.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

The Volcan de Pacaya is a majestic volacano that overlooks the city of Antigua. Every time you look at it, it looks different. Depending on the time of the day it can range from an intense blue/purple to a light diffuse gray. sometimes the clouds cover it partially or completely. Anyhow it is the best sight from the city of Antigua, it can be seen practically from all parts of the city.

“Half day trip in Antigua”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Nice way to spend 1/2 day while staying in Antigua. I took the afternoon departure, which was good for my schedule. Very good guide, option to ride hoseback, great views from the top of the volcano.

“A great day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

I had a fantastic day walking up the volcano. I was a bit puffed out by the time we got to the top, but the guide was good about stopping so us unfit walkers could keep up. There were no lava flows, but the volcano was still really impressive with smoke steaming out, and the imagination running with boiling rock just under our feet. The walk down was breath-taking, with three volcanoes in the distance with cloud swirling around.
