“Good views but don't expect to see glowing lava”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2011

The volcano fairly recently erupted so don't expect to see glowing red lava despite what pamphlets lead you to believe.
Not a very easy hike up due to the loose terrain but you can hire sticks for about $1 to help get you up or you can go on a horse taxi. Lovely views at the top.
Take snacks and water.

“So much fun!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2011

It was hard work, but well worth it. Our tour guide drove us about an hour and a half outside of Antigua where we met our hiking guide and headed up the mountain. We hiked an hour or so up the mountain and spent about 30 minutes at the top. I recommend taking a sweater or rain jacket as it can get pretty cool up top.

“A Strenuous Hike But Well Worth It”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2011

My two friends and I hiked the volcano just the other day. We took a shuttle ride from Antigua, which is about an hour and 15 minutes away. The entrance to the park is 50 Quetzales and when you arrive, there are lots of little kids trying to sell you a rain poncho or a walking stick.

The hike up to the top takes about 2 and a half hours. Unfortunately for us, we visited during the rainy season so it POURED the entire time. By the time we got to the top, the wind had kicked up so the rain was blowing sideways and stinging our faces. The scenery was beautiful, it was weird looking around from the top of the volcano and seeing the clouds below us. We hiked through the lava rocks to a large crater that was belching these huge puffs of hot air and roasted marshmellows inside....very cool! The very last stop was a cave inside the volcano that was very warm....a stop we all enjoyed since we were all soaking wet and freezing cold. The hike back down to the bottom took about an hour and there are several kiosks at the bottom that sell snacks and cold beer.

The hike is beautiful but very steep and strenuous. Our guide moved very quickly and there were times when it was hard to keep up. I also would not recommend doing this excursion during the rainy season. Other than that, it was a fun and memorable experience!

“SO WORTH IT!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2011

I'm going to try and make this brief... SYLVA TRAVEL. $10 and pickup at your hotel. 14 people max in your group. $5 entry fee to park. Be prepared to be swarmed by children selling sticks. BUY a stick. It's $1. You will use it. Bring food and drink up the volcano. You will want it. Sunscreen. It is cold and windy at the top. I used my handkerchief to cover my poor ears. At the top, sit where the dogs sit. They have found the heat. BUY the marshmallows at the entrance to the park. It's fun to cook them at the top in the heat vents. It is amazing and worth it. If you have an ailment or a bad leg/ ankle, then this could be too hard for you. Ride the horse. If you like to exercise, there are strenuous parts, but it's definitely do-able and SO WORTH IT. It feels like a once in a lifetime.
