“Great Value on Antigua”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2009

This was our fourth trip to Antigua but the first time we stayed at Quinta de las Flores. We found out about the hotel from TripAdvisor.

This is the best hotel value we have found in Antigua.

We stayed in one of the "garden" rooms, which had plenty of natural light, was quiet, large and clean. It looked out at the extensive gardens. The gardens are beautifully maintained and cover several(?) acres. There are fountains everywhere throughout the property. Unlike many of the newer hotels in Antigua (Westin and Porta) there is a lot of space here. The rates seemed very good to us compared to places we've stayed in the past. (When you compare rates, keep in mind that the tax of 22% is included at Quinta de las Flores.)

(the "corridor" rooms were a bit dark and did not look out onto the gardens. however, their lower rate reflects that.)

There is a pool that was kept clean but was not heated. There is a children's play area at the back of the property that our 4-year old daughter loved.

The service was excellent and the staff were always responsive to anything we asked--even if just a question about something we had seen in town.

There is a room with three computers and very good (fast) internet access for free. There is no WiFi or internet access in the rooms.

The only meals we had at the restaurant were breakfasts but they were excellent and inexpensive. Pancakes less than $4.00 and a pot of coffee around $1.00.

The biggest negative is that it is quite a walk from town center and with the number of tuk tuks down due to the drop in tourism spending, we often ended up walking all of it. A pleasant walk past numerous ruins, churches and small parks but it could be long for many people. The flip side to being a ways from town center was that it was quiet.

Although we didn't drive, we noticed that they have a huge parking area that was always nearly empty.

(Note also that there are few staff that speak English but they seem to always be able to work things out anyway.)

We will surely stay here again on our next trip to Antigua!

My wife and I visited Antigua and Guatemala for the first time, accompanied by friends who have travelled in Guatemala extensively and who knew Antigua well. The extensive lush gardens, filled with tropical trees, plants, flowers and fountains, were a continual pleasure for walking and the views of the surrounding volcanos were dramatic. We relaxed in the pool and enjoyed delicious breakfasts, drinks and dinner in the open air restaurant overlooking the gardens. Our spacious room with tall ceiling and Guatemalan art had large French doors providing a beautiful view of the gardens. Just outside the doors was a wonderful sitting area for reading or relaxing after fun days exploring central Antigua, within walking distance of Quinta. Front desk staff were helpful in arranging transportation to Lake Atitlan and to the airport in Guatemala City. Restaurant staff were friendly and professional. We would stay there again!

We stayed in one of the casitas, which is basically a townhouse. It's great for a family. A truly lovely place. If I am forced to think of a negative, it's that it's a good walk into the center of town. It's barely an issue, as it's a pleasant walk and cheap tuk-tuks can be used if you need a ride.

This quiet relaxing hotel is distinguished by its beautiful landscaping. In a several acre compound, the owners have created a serene outdoor space with extensive use of fountains, stone walkways, spectacular flower beds, and various other plantings immaculately maintained by a dedicated staff. The website does not begin to portray the beauty of the grounds, which give the aura of a safe and peaceful retreat. The pool area is equally attractive and aesthetically pleasing. This gorgeous property appears to be a one-of-a-kind for Antiguan hotels, and the key to this one’s popularity. Those who appreciate natural settings will love this hotel. Those who prefer luxurious accommodations might consider Meson Panza Verde, which we loved even more, but at twice the price.

Our family of five stayed in a spacious casita, an attractive but not fancy accommodation with two floors, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living, dining, and a full service kitchen, for $140 per night. This seemed like an excellent value, even by Guatemalan standards. The master bedroom had a beautiful view of the gardens so we left our windows open all night. No bugs – just cool fresh air. We had several decent meals at the hotel, including a delicious poolside lunch one afternoon.

The hotel is a good 15 minute walk from the central square. We typically walked to the town center but took tuk-tuks ($2 for the 3 minute ride) back to the hotel at night. It would not be possible to have hotel grounds this extensive closer to the center of town, unless you consider the Casa Santo Domingo for three times the price. We found the front desk staff to be accommodating but not as friendly as the remaining staff, who were as nice as can be.

If you stay at Quinta, we recommend a trip to a local bird sanctuary, Finca el Pilar, just south of town, about 2 km from the hotel. Most, but not all, taxis know where this is. The entrance fee is about $6, and you have unlimited access to a very beautiful tropical forest with a well-maintained trail leading steeply up a valley for more than an hour if you like. Another enjoyable activity is to take a morning bicycle ride (Old Town Outfitters – Valley Ride) through Ciudad Vieja and the adjacent countryside – mostly downhill with a steep ascent on the return to Antigua. Old Town Outfitters is a bit pricey but extremely professional, reliable, and safe.

I stayed 3 nights at Quinta De Las Flores at the start of my trip to Antigua. I thought it was a lovely spot, and fantastically good value - I paid US$65 a night. Rooms were large and charming with local crafts and furniture dotted around in the room and the hotel. Comfortable and very large beds! The gardens were STUNNING. Breakfasts (the only meals I took there) pretty good. I stayed in Room 1 and have no idea what the solitary negative review was saying about traffic pollution! To those who know Asia the closest comparison I can give is that it is like staying in a little boutique garden hotel in Ubud, in Bali. The one cautionary (not negative) point to make is that whilst in Antigua I did have to operate almost solely in my very rudimentary Spanish. Not a lot of English spoken here, so go with your phrasebook - and that includes dealing with reception. Additional NB. if you go up the Pacaya Volcano in the wet season - take something warm and dry to wear and try and go in the morning - I pulled out of the afternoon trip near to the top as the driving rain and bitter wind practically gave me hypothermia - just had T shirt and jeans...very stupid.

This was our second visit to Quinta and we loved it just as much (if not more the second time around). We began our Guatemala trip at Quinta in lovely Antigua. The grounds are so well designed it is like an adventure to uncover all the secret nooks and outdoor spaces that make this resort so unique (the hidden playground in the back was a huge plus for the kids). Even though the hotel was completely booked we felt like we had the place to ourselves. All the outdoor spaces really give guests the sense of privacy. The rooms are super clean and lovely, beds are soft, and the outdoor patio is a nice touch. The restaurant was really good and the service was just right on. We felt very safe and could have spent the whole week by the pool with the kids playing on the playground. It really is a little bit of heaven on earth......a great respite from city life.
