“Stop by for some photos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

A very old church with an interesting history. I walked around and took some photographs, while walking through the city.

“Great place to take photos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

I got some great shots, if you are a photographer, this is a great place to visit. It gets kind of expensive to take the whole family, American tourist will pay a much higher price than the latin american tourists, but the price is still reasonable.

You can purchase a guided tour for a better experience, but I just wanted to take some photos.

right behind the Arco - worth a visit. Not sure why the review has to be 50 characters - when I can state my view in less. let's try to submit now.

“Marimbas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

We stumbled on a huge marimba concert in the courtyard of La Merced as we were on our way to Cafe Escobar for dinner. The concert was wonderful and the steak at Escobar was delicious. (The marimba is the national instrument of Guatemala.)

“Beautiful but very busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

This is a beautiful church to visit - the outside architectural detail is incredible (the color is a buttery yellow with bright white accents). The inside almost looks like a completely different architectural style with more of the earth elements of concrete, greenery and flowers. The beautiful central fountain is viewed best from above on the second floor (you can take the stairs up easily). This site does a good job with signs to help guide you for what to look at and notable areas. Keep an eye out for the beautiful detailing in the ruins. Around the windows, for example, you can see the floral scrolls.

The key with La Merced, though, is to be patient and avoid the huge tour groups. For example, if they are downstairs at the fountain, an option would be to go upstairs and see the lovely views of the hills and sky. Then, when the tour groups leave the fountain and are heading upstairs, take that opportunity to snap your photos looking down on the fountain before the next group arrives. Timing is everything here.
