“One of the best spots to 'people-watch'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Every time I'm in Antigua I like to spend some time just sitting at some bench in the Plaza. Some times the souvenir vendors can be a bit of a nuisance but I understand they need to make a living. It's worth it for a taste of real life in Antigua though.

“A lovely, serene spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Loved Parque Central! It's a lovely slice of green and peace in the middle of the city, walking distance from everywhere, really. There are beautiful trees, quaint little benches all around, and a lovely fountain right at the center. If you like to people watch, this is the place to go. Make sure you're there on a nice sunny day for maximum enjoyment.

I was actually staying in Antigua for a couple of weeks, so I'd go there in the late morning, sit in the park and read some books in Spanish. I spent more time people watching and basking in the sun than I did actually reading the words on the page, but it was always time well spent. There are street vendors in the park selling all sorts of things. I generally refrained from shopping, preferring to do my shopping in ChiChi Market or the Artisan's Market, but there were interesting things to buy. Every once in a while, a seller would approach trying to sell something. I generally declined and, while sometimes they try to get a little pushy, if you're firm with your 'no thank you' they'll generally leave you alone pretty quickly.

In truth, the park is really only great during clear weather, since there's no cover during rainy weather. That said, there is a lovely strip of restaurants right nearby so if it starts raining you can quickly run into them. I went during rainy season, so this happened frequently. Just sit in the sun, duck into a cafe when it starts to rain, and then run back out to the park when the sun returns.

It's also open at night, and people are definitely out, sitting around in the park and eating at nearby restaurants. It's pretty well lit and I think there's a taxi stand across the street from the park in the event you're out too late and don't feel comfortable walking back to your lodging.

Also, it's a great landmark for those who are direction-impaired. I knew how to get everywhere from the parque so if I ever lost my way I'd just head to the parque and navigate from there.

“Full of life”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

The park was pretty with a fountain, colourful flowers and trees. I liked the mix of tourists with the locals, in particular the indegenious people. Their clothes are so colourful and the men look good in their hats. It was a good place to sit and watch the world go by.

“Great shopping”

A wonderful place to get an authentic look at such a beautiful city. The shopping is fabulous and certainly one should be ready to bargain.
