“Character Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The Porta Hotel is just two blocks from the main plaza. It has all the modern amenities, spa, gym, two solar heated swimming pools, wireless internet in all public areas and rooms etc. The Porta Hotel Antigua has been chosen by Condé Nast Traveler magazine readers as one of the Top 5 hotels in Central America.

Our room had a fireplace, free WIFI, large bathroom. It was mighty fine. To get to the dining room we had to descend down some stairs and follow an underground tunnel or access it from outside. The buffet style meals were good.

Antigua is one of the loveliest colonial towns in Guatemala. The hotel fits in with the architecture of the old buildings and cobblestone streets. Part of the hotel is new, but it appears to be from another century. The rooms are large, and the bathroom is huge. Our room faced the small courtyard with the pool--lots of plants and hanging flowers added to the old-world charm. The food was always plentiful and very good. Caravan Tours chose this hotel, but if I were to go back on my own, I would definitely stay here. Antigua is a walkable town, with the hotel situated in a good location for going in any direction.

Porta Antigua Hotel is located in Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site is a beautiful facility. Built within the last five years it has the look of one that has been standing for many, many years which is according to the building requirements of the city. Built around a a lap pool and well attended gardens our clean room with a fireplace, high ceiling with a fan, safe, and huge bathroom was gorgeous with emphasis to detail. There's a tunnel under the street that one can go to get to another section of hotel rooms and grounds that also have beautiful landscape and gardens. There is also another dining room, bar, huge pool in that area. Our tour group had our meals in the smaller dining area by the entrance. The food was a variety of delicious salads, entrees, and desserts at the buffet area. Servers were attentive both at breakfasts and dinners. Jose Coc gave us very good attention. The desk personnel were friendly and efficient. The hotel is about four blocks from the main plaza, churches, artisan markets, other historic buildings. The hotel maintained discreet security for guests' safety. This was our third hotel on our tour of Guatemala, and we enjoyed our two night stay here.

Our third trip to Guatemala, first stay here. On par with Casa Santo Domingo. Good food, beautiful and clean room, coutyard and pool area top flight. When will this country let a person flush toilet paper?

From the open air lobby and dining rooms to the beautifully furnished guest rooms, the Porta hotel is a lovely place to stay. The food in the on-site restaurant is delicious. The hotel is conveniently located near the central park and shopping areas, and all desk clerks speak English. The hotel will exchange currency for you as well.

This hotel is a sprawling complex in the south end of town. There are often large groups at the hotel for special events such as weddings. My rate included breakfast which was a buffet. There was more food that I would ever need, but it was a pleasant setting and the service was very friendly. I found all the staff to be helpful. The grounds are beautiful and very relaxing.
