“Antiguan charm at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2011

Beautiful hotel built amongst Antiguan ruins. The staff are extremely welcoming and the grounds and hotel are kept in amazing condition. It is a little further out of town than some hotels, but this makes it a quite area and it is only a short walk to the central square (15 minutes). Many thanks

Note this is from a guy who rarely feels compelled to write travel reviews of any kind! I have nothing but praise for Ricardo's and his great staff's ability to have exceeded our expectations of my wife's and my five nights at Hotel Cirilo! We were looking for a hotel in Antiqua that was unique, quiet, smaller, and ability to deliver personalized service without being overbearing. Here, we definitely found it. Wow! Off the beaten path and away from the center of Antigua (which really isn't a loud place in my lengthy experience of central American cities), we found this wonderful, pristine, carefully manicured oasis. We shall return!

We were at the Hotel Cirilo for my brother's wedding. The management thought of every detail, both in setting up the wedding and reception facilities and in caring for the family members who stayed there over two or three days. The facilities are truly one of a kind - the hotel is built into the ruins of a colonial-era structure, but the blending of ancient and modern (the hotel is only 8 months old) is seamless. There are only a few rooms, so there is a lot of individual attention. The breakfasts were great, and the service was excellent. Our bed was comfortable. There were only two slight concerns: one, the hotel is a little off the beaten path in Antigua so it's a little hard to find; two, the rooms had only a fireplace for heat, which normally is not necessary anyway. Neither of these concerns detracted from our overall great experience.

Everything about this place was magical... The setting around the church ruins, the location - a bit away from the center, providing a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, and of course, the hospitality - Ricardo, the hotel owner, and the whole staff was warm, friendly and professional (including lunch boxes when we left at 5am to climb the volcano, and recommending places to stay at other destinations).
Walking around the city, we peeked into other hotels, and although many are truly beautiful, Cirilo was something else, probably due to the intimate atmosphere, having only about 8 rooms in the place.
The hotel is a bit off center, 15 minutes walk from the arch, so better to take a tuk tuk when returning to the hotel after dark. Definitely worth it!
We've been recommending Hotel Cirilo to everyone we met since...

I stayed at Hotel Cirilo with my two teenage daughters. The room and bathroom were spacious enough for the three of us. All the rooms face a courtyard, where you can sit by the pool and enjoy the morning sun and a cup of tea. The breakfast area opens to the outdoors as well. It's nice to stay at a place which has its own outdoor space away from the noise and traffic of the town. The hotel is walking distance from the central plaza. The hotel looks just like the photos, and the service is impeccable and the owner is very accommodating. We will definitely stay here again.

We loved staying at this place - the setting is beautiful with old church walls in the garden, a nice little swimming pool, romantic setting, beautiful sunsets from the roof terrace and very caring staff and management.

It is a boutique hotel with lots of charm and the setting is amazing. We loved the breakfasts at the pool and the staff are really very caring and friendly. The rooms are very spacious with excellent amenities including a fireplace.

It is located on the edge of town, very quiet, and most locations can easily be reached on foot. In the evenings Ricardo, the manager, provided us many times with free transport to the dining places in town and he was an excellent source for dinner suggestions.

We left our Antigua hotel booking to the last minute and were not able to do much research before selecting a place to stay. Photos on the Hotel Cirilo web site looked nice, and it was only a little more than we initially planned to spend. We liked the idea of a hotel built on a ruins site, so we decided to give it a try despite concerns about the less-than-central location.

Little did we know what a treat we'd find! Only 7 months old, the Cirilo is a beautiful boutique hotel with exquisite attention to detail. Each room has its own working fireplace which is cleaned and restocked every morning. Ricardo, the manager, goes above and beyond to make sure you have a pleasant stay. The food is excellent; we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner -- the soup and steak were both terrific, and we found prices to be reasonable. And the pool and garden area are simply lovely. After a day of wandering the hectic streets of Antigua, it was very refreshing to return to our little oasis!

While the hotel is a 5-minute walk to town, this was perfectly fine for our tourist purposes. Cab and/or tuk-tuk fares are very low (max US$5) for getting back after dark. The hotel has good security; the grounds are walled, there is a night watchman, and everyone including guests must be buzzed in via the front gate.

In the interest of full disclosure, I did find the bed too hard for my taste, but the rest of the experience was so great that I hardly cared.

I will reminisce fondly about our time at the Hotel Cirilo and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exquisite boutique hotel experience in Antigua Guatemala.
