“Pretty exterior, OK interior”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2011

The outside of my room ($46 USD) was very beautiful but i found the inside of my room was sparse and minimal -- mine had two twin beds if I remember correctly. There was no A/C which wasn't really needed for the heat but it would have been nice to reduce humidity. The windows didn't close entirely so it's not a hermetically sealed bug-free environment : ) I honestly thought $46 was a bit high for the room but that's probably because Antigua was just more expensive than my final destination (San Pedro La Laguna). There was a very strong chemical, antiseptic smell in the bathroom that was bad enough that I considered trying to move into another room even though I was only there for 12 hrs.

The positives were the convenient location, free internet use in their "outdoor lobby," access to filtered water outside your room, and a helpful front desk. I needed to call a school and arrange a taxi for a 3 hr drive and they were quite helpful although my spanish was terrible and their English was only functional so it was still a bit stressful. I also needed to call the driver and school in the morning to coordinate and they let me use their phone and I was charged a very low rate per minute. (my entire phone call was probably 70 cents USD). I don't know what to compare this to since I don't know this area well -- a friend stayed at Cristina hotel which was much cheaper and she thought it was nice. I might check that out next time. The convenience of unlimited filtered water and a computer to use the internet, however, was kinda worth it when I had just landed in the country and needed to take care of some business.....

As the reviewer stated, $46. We are a mid-range beautiful hotel in Central America, not the US. So, when people travel outside the US, they experience different things. I assume this is the reason most would travel outside of the US. We did our best to acommodate this guest, but she was allergic to everything, kind of attitude. While, we do appreciate her review, she would be happier going to Las Vegas or Disney.

Antigua Guatemala is at an altitude of 5,000 ft, which gives us great weather, year around (Day is 80 & night is 60), everyday of the year, varying on a few degrees. This is the reason most travel books, call us the "land of eternal spring". So, we do not need AC. Out of 150 small hotels in Antigua, you can find AC in 2 large corporate hotels costing around $300 + per night. They only have AC because they cater to a higher market & people looking for US style hotels. In those, you are not a tourist that experiences Guatemala, but it is like going resort that you do not mix with locals. Not my cup of tea.

The reviewer also mentions another hotel in her review, that is not comparing apples to apples. It is a lower ranged hotel, that is on the north edge of Antigua, 8 blocks from central park. Casa Antigua is a 2 minute walk from the central park, (no comparison). After a long day or night, would you rather walk 2 minutes to your hotel or 20 minutes? Antigua is a city where you can walk anywhere in a few minutes, but closer to the central park is always the best & safest.

I go to Guatemala frequently and on this occasion, needed a place for just one night. I wanted somewhere safe for a woman traveling alone and close enough to the central park. This place delivers! The cost was very reasonable, and breakfast was only $5 (though i chose to eat out instead) I imagine that some would have complained about the cleanliness of the room, but for me, I was mainly looking for somewhere close to town, quiet, and safe, so the lack of the 5* amenities and feel to the rooms was fine for me. If you, however, are a really picky person, you may want to spend more to stay at a higher level boutique hotel.

Room Tip: all rooms seem to be tucked away in different parts of the flowing gardens.

This hotel is really super, a very nice place.....it is clean and quiet....there are nice courtyards with lush vegetation............there is a store connected to the hotel that sells artisan products for the going fair rate (not inflated), so you don't even have to barter for paintings, blankets, hangings, table cloths, etc. Esperanza and her husband Martin run the store, and Esperanza works in the hotel..... the staff is personable and the service wonderful......it is right next door to one of the restaurants of the Fonda de la Calle Real, which is good because there is no restaurant in the hotel. If I had any criticism it would be that credit cards cost 10 % more at registration......but we certainly will go back again !!! It is centrally located also

This hotel is strategically located. It is very affordable and clean. It provides a good breakfast. the staff is very kind and helpful. The price is reasonable but the hotel is not luxurious. You don't need a 5 star hotel in this town. I am a 5 star person and was quite happy with this one.

On our last trip to Antigua--- my husband's first--- we stayed in this nice hotel. It ,like almost all hotels in Antigua, is very well located as the entire city is only a few blocks squared. It was a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, quiet, comfortable, central place to stay in Antigua.

Casa Antigua is really interesting, it seems like an old covent converted into a hotel...The room had a lot of religious artifact and interesting architecture features that gave it a lot of charm.

Walls are a bit thin though, could hear my next door neighboors' TV, snooring, a crying baby, not the most quiet nights I've had in Guatemala...

The ladies at the front desk were really sweet, and helpful...You can book all of your transportation and tours at the front desk.

The hotel is well located, in the heart of Antigua, near of all the action and restaurants...

I visit Antigua about twice a year with mission groups and have tried several hotels. This is the one I'll use from now on. The property is beautiful, the rooms clean and well-decorated, the water in the shower hot, the breakfast (available at small extra cost) excellent, and the staff friendly (and they speak English!). The location couldn't be better; it's very nice to be within a couple blocks of terrific restaurants and shopping. All in all, This hotel offers great value, excellent amenities and unbeatable service.
