“cool place to socialize”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2010

Its important to distinguish the hostel from the hotel (?) owned by the same people. We stayed in the HOSTEL. Simple room, great location, very cool vibe, lost of people coming and going so great to meet other travellers and socialize. Lively in the evening but the bar quietened down by 10 pm ish. Breakfast FANTASTIC and security seemed good too (we got names checked on a list by the security guard when returning around midnight one night). Probably not best place if you want peace and quiet and i got a bit annoyed with ALWAYS having to wait for the shared bathroom. It was constantly busy! But definitely recommend it for the vibe.

You sleep in a dorm with capacity for 6 for 60 Quetzales. The place is OK, clean, the staff is friendly, their breakfast is good and they have wifi. What I think this hostel lacks is a communal space where to socialize with others. They do have a terrace, on the roof, with great views. Don't be confused with the Black Cat Hostel: the owners of both are the same, but the hostels are different.

We stayed in the Black cat for over a week in September 2009 whilst we did a Spanish course in Antigua. We stayed in a double which was pretty good (the Guatemalans have mini sized beds!) We payed 150 Q a night which included a huge breakfast, you can choose from a big menu (the breakfast burrito is best) you don't really need to bother with lunch. They also have a great dinner menu too with good prices. The staff were great, so friendly and helpful. Whilst we were there I got the flu and they were really helpful with finding a doctor and pharmacist. Location wise they are right in the middle of town, all bars restaurants etc.. are walking distance. Would stay there again in a heart beat :)

This is a place to party and not really to sleep. Unfortunately I was roomed with three very messy guys who continuously screamed in the courtyard. By morning there is no place to set foot on the ground (it was all covered by their stuff) and the room smelled like a dirty shoe. The room I was in was 6 room dorm with en-suite bathroom, but one of the boys locked the door by accident so no one could use it until the maintenance came to fix it. The room door can only be locked from inside and each guest do not have keys. the front entrance is also open, so literally anyone off the street can walk in to your room. I didn't feel safe here at all.

My bus dropped me off in front of this hostel, so i decided to stay for a night, but I moved to another the next day. as the reservation goes, once you are in, you are in until you tell them otherwise. It costs money to change your bunk. There are two internet computers for guest use, but there is always someone using them. it's easier to go to internet cafe two doors down. book exchange is non-existent.

The restaurant serves relatively good food for the price, breakfast hour is very strictly adhered and they won't serve even coffee a minute earlier (although you can sit in the restaurant and wait). breakfast is included in the price. The price altogether is very reasonable

We just returned from Guatemala and it is such a beautiful place. We stayed (5) of us at The Black Cat Inn in Antigua most of the time. It is a charming small hotel, very affordable. It is clean and the staff is more than willing to help in any way. They arranged and provided our transportation from Guatemala City to Antigua, also to Lake Atitlan, Chici and Panajachel. It is located about 5 blocks from the central city where banks, shops, and restaurants are. Also a beautiful square is there, Their food is very good and safe to eat. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who isn't looking for a luxury hotel.

THE best hostel in Antigua. Great staff, clean rooms, hot water, and the best hostel food I've ever eaten. A bit on the pricey side for a hostel BUT, their rate includes a free breakfast.... and I dont mean no cereal with warm milk, I mean the best breakfast burritos or omellettes in town. Staff is very friendly, went out on the town with them a couple times. Internet, media room, and lots of friendly travelers, very nice crowd gathers there. Plus they have a 1/2 off happy hour every night.

  • Liked — Location, staff and food
  • Disliked — hey, its a hostel. you roll with the punches

We returned from almost 7 weeks travelling in Central America. Our first 3 nights were in Antigua, Guatemala at The Black Cat Inn. The hotel is centrally located about 5 blocks from the central square. The hotel is basic with daily room cleaning. Breakfast is also included in the price ($30 U.S. for two people). The breakfast is great! There are tables in the courtyard near the entrance, but also on the rooftop with breathtaking views of the nearby volcanoes. If you have an early excursion or departure you can also arrange for a sandwich to go to replace breakfast. We would highly recommend this hotel.
