“What once was world class resort isn't anymore.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2012 via mobile

We've stayed and eaten at the resort a couple of dozen times since it opened back in late '70's and at least once a year for the last fifteen years. It was a world class resort early on but fell into decline for years. Give them credit for some improvement in more recent years but still a long way to go. Very nice lobby. Service is not what I consider resort class, lacks refinement and attention paid to details. Some shopping on site but limited compared to it's hayday. Rooms are adequate, although some are dated, especially in the tower and condos. The staff is generally helpful and willing to share knowledge of the surrounding area attractions. Food service generally adequate but on the pricey side for what it is...just paid $34, including tip, for an omlet, eggs Benedict, tea and coffee.

“End of Summer Stay at the GTR”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2008

Well, we too were lulled into the advertisement of the recent renovation and the new water play area for the kids. We just came back from a 4 night stay at the GTR. First let me talk about the main hotel. The lobby was beautiful, and you could clearly notice the renovations. We had stayed in the hotel room area that had a nice bathroom, decent space, and 2 double beds. The other reviews are true, no coffee pot, no small fridge, and that is pretty disappointing. Also I found that the hallways in the hotel were musty and needed some good airing out. We then went to the indoor water play area. Do not be mislead, there is an old jacuzzi in the back corner with visible cracks (clearly not part of the renovation) 2 pools, a small spray scape, 2 small slides that go into a second pool. The size is not the problem..when you call and ask about their indoor pool area they tell you its not a "great wolfe lodge" waterpark. I can live with that but the main problem was it was just not clean. Even when we took the shuttle to the beach club, the pool there was dirty and so was the hot tub. We still enjoyed the water but for the money you pay I don't think it was worth it. I had talked to another family and they felt the same way. The beach is very small so you could probably fit 3 families of 4 down at the water but it would be pretty tight. For our family of 4 with kids ages 4 and 7, we would not visit the GTR again.

“Cherry Festival Stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2008

Booked a room here based on multimillion dollar renovation. The lobby was beautiful but the room was disappointing. Small, dingy, air conditioner problems, no coffee pot.

“Nothing Special”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2008

We stayed at Grand Traverse for a long weekend at the end of February. As we entered our room in the 'new' towers, we were a bit surprised to have an extremely small room. We did call down to the front desk to ask about our options, only to be informed that there was a conference in town, there were no other options. I have to say for being 'new' the room appeared to be a bit run down also. There were hard water stains and paint peeling. Also, upon closer look there was a strange stain on the comforter, close to the bottom of the bed. We quickly and carefully removed that piece of bedding, only to reveal a stained top blanket. Cozy. That night we slept on just sheets. For breakfast we ordered room service, good, but pricey for what you get. We were told to place the tray outside our door when we were finished and someone would promptly be by to take of it..

The early afternoon was for the spa.. very calming, but they had our appointments at the wrong times due to 'leap year'. In fact, when we checked out, they failed to charge us for a treatment, once again, 'leap year'.

Upon returning to our room (two hours later) our dirty breakfast plates were still outside our room. AND the bed had been "re-freshed", with the same nasty blankets. I decided to give housekeeping one more chance and removed them myself again..

That evening we headed into town to have dinner. (Red Ginger, FABuouls!) After we went straight back to Grand Traverse to catch the bus to the casino.. at approx. 10pm, our dirty breakfast dishes STILL were there to greet us!! We called the front desk, just to give them a friendly reminder. (Well, as friendly as it gets at this point)

Getting into the elevator was quite a treat also, as the doors opened a huge pile of vomit was awaiting us... eck.

Saturday morning we headed back to the spa for a couple more treatments. We were promptly reminded that we owed for the previous day (not our fault, but that's fair enough)

Once again, the comforter wasn't changed. I found housekeeping down the hall and asked them to change the blankets. They were very kind.

Overall, you can make your own decisions. I wouldn't go back.

“Ok nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2008

First let me state that because we were with a group they put us in the original section of the hotel.

The decor was similar to that of most hotels.

There the pool was extremely overcrowded because they open it up to local people that are interested in swimming for a price.

The room was clean and neat, but really nothing exceptional like I would expect from a place like this.

There seemed to be a shortage of fast moving elevators and seemed like we waited for ever for an elevator.

The location was great, the site was good and the overall experience was ok

No reason to avoid this hotel but do not look for anything special
