We had a fantastic dinner at Oran Mor tonight. It's the beginning of restaurant season in Nantucket, and we were lucky to get a table. The regulars seemed to be returning in happy droves.
The space is lovely, on the second floor of a house on South Beach Street, one block from the water. The bar is curved and would be a nice place to sit for a while. But the friendly staff took us to a nice table at a waterside window. There are actually four rooms so no one room feels big or noisy. (Apparently one of the rooms can accommodate groups for parties and receptions of 12 or so.)
We chose the starter course of a charcuterie plate with three kinds of pate', with a bottle of cote du rhone wine. My husband also appreciated the FINE selection of artisanal beers. (Surprisingly hard to find.) The flavors were complex and delicate, and the portions just right.
For entrees we had a lamb loin with lamb sausage over an emmer (wild wheat) tabouli with parsnip and garlic puree, and monkfish with tomato and pepper coulis with creamy polenta, both excellent. The staff were there every few minutes to pour from our bottle of wine which was kept cold in the kitchen. Just the right amount of friendly support, not too much. (On our way out we met Heather, one of the owners and really appreciated her warmth.)
Dessert, which we usually decline, was worth getting: a chocolate bread pudding with a dollop of creme fraiche and bourbon-laced caramel sauce, and we also had a glass of Lagavulin single malt scotch which you might know is GREAT with chocolate. This dessert was divine. Not heavy, not too sweet, just tender and warm and wonderful.
We very heartily recommend Oran Mor, and we hope to return some day. It's a very special place, with perfect touches from start to finish. Nantucket is lucky to have this restaurant, and that is saying something, where the competition is so strong.
