“Excellent Food!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2011

My husband and I went out for dinner at 12 Degress East and had an excellent dinner. The food was delicious. We had the appetizer special, which was a chipotle mac and cheese, with sausage and veggies. For dinner we had the ribs and steak, even the sides were seasoned perfectly. The waitstaff were pleasent and accommodating. The only critique I would offer is that there was a moderate wait for the food even though the restaurant was not very busy (it was a Wednesday evening). The food was well worth the wait and reasonably priced for Nantucket.

“Getting better all the time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

12 Degrees East is new for 2011. It is managed (owned?) by the same guy who runs (owns?) Slip 14, which is one of our favorite restaurants on Nantucket so we had to try it. Also, it is one of the few restaurants on the island with a raw bar - surprising, no?

My family has been to the restaurant twice this summer. On both occasions the raw clams and oysters were perfectly fresh and shucked to order. The main courses were consistently very good. I especially like the flounder which comes with a cracker crust and was perfectly cooked and the bacon wrapped cod. My meat eaters have been very happy as well.

The service isn't perfect but it is very friendly and they are definitely trying to please.

There are two dining area - one by the bar and a semi-separate adjoining room. The bar is definitely noisier.

My only issue with the place is that when you call early in the day you get an answering machine to leave reservation requests. I don't think anyone mans the phone until they open for business at 6 p.m. Of course, you can call the night before but not everyone is that organized.

Given it's Nantucket, I think the value is okay. The food is certainly good.

“Could be great still needs work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011

Had an OK meal at 12Degrees recently. The biggest plusses are a nice airy space and good seating.

The downsides are a still learning waitstaff and some issues with the food. This has been the case on each of my three visits, so tjhey seem to be consistent problems.

The good plates we've had so far include the salmon tacos and the chicken plate. Both are properly prepared and tasty. The unfortunate dishes are the bacon wrapped cod which is really forgettable, the ribs which are unpleasantly spicy, The Rib-eye, the chicken wings and the tosatadas. None of these is "awful," they are just not very good.

Drinks are expensive and service is haphazard-especially as the place becomes more of a saloon around 9:00. We all pretty much felt it is "fine," but for the same amount of money you can eat far better on the island. The space is appealing and the bathrooms were both clean and had ample soap and towels.
