“we loved the white elephant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2007

We went to the white elephant mid week and after the summer rush so the hotel may not have been full. the staff were never stressed or too busy - infact there was a lovely friendly atmosphere from the moment we arrived.

it was a special occasion (30th wedding anniversary) & my husband had spoken with the advance concierge service (great service - she responded to all queries about size of the room ironing facilities etc). in our room there were superb flowers he'd ordered & the requested champagne & chocolate dipped strawberries plus a gift from the hotel. she had also made a dinner reservation for us at the restaurant we'd requested - toppers. it was very good.

we had a harbour view suite. housekeeping was excellent. the room felt fresh & was spacious & pretty. we had a good harbour view & a small outside area. luckily we were away from the restaurant & although we could hear the people above walking around every now & then we never heard any other noise from our neighbours. our stay was peaceful.

the products in the bathroom were very nice & my husband fell in love with the robes. breakfast, which we had in the room or on the terrace, every morning was delicious.

our only less than ideal experience was in the hotel restaurant but they had a large party in the night we were there & staff felt preoccupied. the food was ok.

all in all we loved the white elephant. it was exactly what we wanted & hoped for & we'd go back - mid week & not in the summer - again.

  • Liked — The view & the location & the huge bed.
  • Disliked — the dining room

Had a wonderful time at the Harbor House Village Woof Hotel. We travelled with our 2 labs and they had a great time on Nantucket. Many of the outdoor restaurants were pet friendly.

Harbor House is so convenient to town, and the staff were so helpful and friendly. The rooms were so clean and the fact that it was "pet friendly" was not evident (except for the dog toys that were put out in the entry foyer!)

Unfortunately, a day into our stay, they began renovations (equipment arrived, ripping out landscaping, cutting down trees, etc.) Apparently, the Woof Hotel and the building next door will be completely gutted and replaced with some type of "ownership" property.

Too bad! I heard that they may designate one of the other properties as pet friendly.

All in all (with the exception of the noise from the heavy equipment) I would recommend Harbor House Village as a lovely, fairly cost effective place to stay.

Please note that some of these older reviews pertain to the Harbor House Village, which is not the White Elephant. For reasons beyond me, we cannot move them since the Harbor House no longer exists. Very odd. I apologize.

Most of the complaints I see here are from people who paid insane sums of money ($750) for one night stays. I suppose that does distort one's vision and raises their expectations. I stayed there for 2 nights using their "Too Good to Be True" rates of $225/night. The stay was the best I've ever had in any hotel. The room was spotlessly clean and cozy. The beds were soft and the pillows even had white elephants embroidered in. I asked for a non-ocean view with porch room and even got a great side way of the ocean.

The staff was very helpful and the concierge was delightful. Most of the staff seem to be foreign imported students, but their level of service was fine. Free Port and Sherry in the library was very nice too.

When I was there, a gale blew through with pouring rain and it truly felt like the old fisherman days of Nantucket, with the salty sea churning and the rain whipping against the window pane.

We ate at the White Elephant restaurant which was good but not spectacular. Topper's restaurant in the Wauwinet (on the other side of the island) is fantastic though with free shuttle transportation and by boat.

Love Nantucket, this was my second trip - hope to come back soon.

Briefly: helpful staff, lovely rooms, free internet and -- best of all -- terrific proximity to town.

We stayed at the Harbor House Village for 2 nights in July. It is a nice complex and very convenient location. It was a very short walk to Children's Beach/playground. Also very short walk to restaurant/shops area and the Steamship ferry. A bit father to the grocery store but we had a 3 year old with us so really not that far for adults/teens. The grounds are well kept and the pool area was very nice with lots of toys for the kids to play in the water. The rooms were average size (likely good size for Nantucket - this was out first visit) but they did smell a bit musty (maybe this is common on the island also). We just left the windows opens and it aired out quickly. We would consider staying again although we might check out something else just to compare on our next trip.

My first red flag should have been: 'no refunds for any reason, so be sure to get trip insurance!" Second: they deducted the full amount from my credit card immediately, no deposits here! I asked for best room available (it was a special event) and for $700 per night we were given a 11' x 13' sleeping cubicle with a teeny foyer and bathroom. The air conditioner barely functioned and 2 calls for service went unheeded. I had arranged for an in-room massage but when realized there was no room for a massage table in our room was offered a "spartan" (their word) alternative, this room didn't allow space for the therapist to move around the table. Again, the AC malfunctioned (this room was freezing) with no thermostat and an inoperable window. I declined the massage but had to threaten credit card dispute at checkout to have charge removed. The staff, with one exception (he was generously rewarded), was snotty and put out by simple requests. I could go on but I'm going to begin trying to forget this experience - starting now! P.S. Nantucket in the summer has become a parody of itself - a veritable "New England Island Theme Park". OK, starting to forget...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2007

I was nervous to stay at this hotel because some of the previous reviews (which I read after I booked my stay) weren't so glowing. We were pleasantly surprised.

I have to start off by saying that we booked in January at a special rate. This is our fifth stay in Nantucket (twice we rented a house and twice stayed at a local B&B).

For the rate, which was around $200 a night, this place was good (and less expensive than some of the other places). It was close to the center of town, which worked for us because we didn't bring our car. The rooms were of a normal size for Nantucket. The hotel was very kid friendly (although, we don't have kids) as is the island. We brought our dog, and he had a blast in the Woof Park. The staff was friendly. We never did without anything that we needed.

If you're coming to this hotel expecting a serene getaway, you'll be disappointed. Nantucket isn't the place for those looking for a spa experience. It's a family-oriented getaway and pretty expensive. So, if you've never been there before, and aren't aware of the vibe, you'll be surprised if you're expecting something beyond.

  • Liked — Dog friendly
  • Disliked — Rooms could have been a little cleaner, specfically the rugs
