“Always a treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

We have stayed at The Wauwinet three times and were also married there, so we know the property well. Highly recommend the bay facing rooms, which have fantastic views. The Wauwinet is about a 15 minute drive from town or a 50 minute boat ride, which we like to do in the evening if venturing to town for dinner. We consider the location to be a key positive attribute, as it is away from the throngs in town and near both bay and beach. We love taking bike rides to Sconset, although people who enjoy being out and about might see value in renting a car. The inn does run regular shuttle service and it works well. Topper's, the restaurant, is always great and the wine list is justly renowned.

Overall, a fantastic retreat and we will continue to return each year.

Room Tip: Bay facing queen rooms are worth it for the view.

Dear HMMIII,

I have to say that your recommendations are right on the spot! Yes the wine list is pretty amazing we have the Grand Award from the Wine Spectator Magazine it is the highest award they give out. Our sommeliers are currently in France touring Champagne and Burgundy so they can offer truly in depth perspective to areas that are so fascinating with Chef’s menus at TOPPER’S restaurant.

Our location as you have commented on is also pretty amazing between the wild Atlantic and bay facing due west! Did you know that we also have a local oyster farm just off The Wauwinet on the bay side and our oysters come directly from the farm. It is a real ocean to table experience. The oysters are call “retsyo” The next time you are here you should try a dozen with a nice white burgundy from our sommeliers I would be happy to join you!

Hope to see you soon in 2014!

Not sure what is best about the Wauwinet; the location the facilities or the staff as all 3 are equally great.

The location is phenomenal and if you love beach and quiet there is none better on Nantucket.

The property is SO Nantucket too, tastefully decorated with Island appropriate decor.

The staff is very friendly and always very warm and helpful

Our favorites are the noontime hot cider (a don't miss), late afternoon fire in the living room and they have the best Eggs Benedict for breakfast.

If you get Nantucket this is the place to stay.

Dear Vincent D,

Thanks for being such a big fan of The Wauwinet. I agree we are so Nantucket! You came to visit in my opinion the best time of the year! I appreciate the staff acknowledgment it is a great team and we are always excited to exceed expatiation!

The hot cider in the afternoon is also nice but the fire seals the deal very relaxing! Come back in the spring of 2014 we also have the fireplace going and the 2014 wine festival is right around the corner.

See you in 2014. Keep a look out of for our e-blast for great room rates in 2014. Hot, dates cool rates!

We spent a beautiful fall weekend here. Yes, the rooms and bathrooms are small, but every detail is attended to and the staff is friendly and you lack for nothing. We opted to order breakfast off the menu rather than complimentary continental breakfast and it was worth it. Great service, lovely property. The jitney service to and from downtown is a real plus and super easy. You aren't downtown but you can get there easily enough.

This is our 12th visit in 15 years to the Wauwinet . . . came here for our honeymoon, and try to make it back for an anniversary celebration each year. The location alone is worth the trip, and to have such a special place to stay makes it even more spectacular. From the moment James opened the front door for us, to the welcome sparkling wine, and "happy anniversary" cupcake in our room - decadent, by the way- we were just relaxed and glad to be back. Everyone at the Inn seems happy to be there, guests and staff alike. The food at Toppers is delicious, and so expertly served; even the "early risers station" of coffee, tea and sweets is appreciated after a long walk on the beach to greet the sun. Finally, the turn down service is the perfect way to end any day. This is a special place, for travelers who are looking to get away from it all, and be pampered. Happy 15th to us, and happy 25th to the Wauwinet!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a bayside view, if possible. The cottages are also super private and romantic, b...

Dear Ptillie,

Thank you for visiting so often! We are celebrating our 25th anniversary so thank you for coming back for all your special occasions and anniversary’s. James will be excited that he is mentioned in your review of the inn he is Mr. hospitality of Wauwinet. I agree with you review of the inn. This is a special place and worth the trip. I would call you both ambassadors of the inn because you have so much history. Well as we get ready to close for the winter we are always reflecting on our season and comments like this make it all worthwhile. Thank you so much my team and I appreciate the business and friendship alike. We will look forward to seeing you for your next anniversary or just a quick getaway from reality.

Had an amazing 2 night stay at the Wauwinet! Great location, great staff. We had a special night at Toppers restaurant and my boyfriend enjoyed his spa visit. My only disappointment was that I was notified at checkout that there was an $80 charge for what appeared to be a courtesy Grant Point lighthouse tour listed under the amenities. When I explained that the was nothing written about an additional charge, the front desk said "they checked with the manager" and that I was responsible for it! I felt that I should not have been charged because it was never mentioned on their web site or was I ever told in person when I was handed the slip for the tour.

Dear Dentaldee908,

I am so glad you enjoyed you stay at The Wauwinet. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to notice what great staff we have. Did you know that we have some team members that have been with The Wauwinet for over 23 years pretty amazing. TOPPER’S restaurant is such a treat our new fall menu items have just been added and we have been receiving great feedback from our dinners. I am sorry to hear about the communication error with the Great Point Tour. The tour is offered by The Trustees of The Reservation a non for profit organization and not The Wauwinet. We just recommend the tour as is it is something truly unique to be able to access this natural resource and see the great point light house. All proceeds support ongoing conservation work at Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, including conducting wildlife research, protecting endangered species and their habitats, and maintaining the structure of the lighthouse. The Wauwinet does not take any portions of the proceeds. Again I am sorry about the confusion about the tour we will make sure this information is updated on our website and we will make sure all our guest know what to expect going forward.

Our recent repeat stay at The Wauwinet was extraordinary in every way except one, but the pluses were so great that we would award six stars if possible. The Wauwinet is subtle luxury in a spectacular, yet understated and remote, location with to-die-for views of the bay and the ocean. In addition to the onsite restaurant, there are many great restaurants in downtown Nantucket, 15 minutes away, and the inn provides regular, free jitney service to and from downtown so that drinking and driving is not an issue. (Nantucket police are unforgiving.) There is tennis, access to golf off-site, a fitness room, a supply of nice bicycles, a wonderful bay cruise, beach sitting, swimming, cooking lessons, lobstering, fishing, great staff and much more.
Now for the glitch: The inn boasts a wonderful, large lawn with comfortable chaise lounges overlooking the bay. (See the accurate website.) We frequently bought a glass of popular white wine to enjoy on the lawn late in the afternoon. One day, we walked into the small bar to buy two glasses of our favorite $11.00-per-glass white wine, but we encountered a young sommelier acting as fill-in bartender. We told him that we wanted another two glasses of the same wine as we had before. He said, “You might like to try something else.” We said, “Like what?” He said, something like, “I have a very nice white Burgundy that is only sold in half bottles, but there are two glasses in a half bottle.” We agreed to try his recommendation, and it was not until he opened and quickly poured it and presented the bill that we learned that we had to pay $175.00 plus tip for our two glasses of afternoon wine rather than two times $11.00! We were robbed in plain day light and will never again trust a sommelier…..any sommelier.
That said, we will again return to The Wauwinet because one out-of-control rotten apple doesn’t make the apple tree bad.

Dear LocalCitizen3939,

Thank you for you most recent review of The Wauwinet! ¾ off the review accurately reflects what we offer at the hotel. The other ¼ of the review is surprising. The hospitality of the property extends beyond just the last impressions. Clearly the last impression of our sommeliers actions did not leave a good impression. Our wine list is expansive with over 1,500 selections including half bottles. Our wine by the glass program also offers wide selections. I have instructed the wine team to always refer to our wine list for pricing when selecting wine. The white wine from Burgundy can range in pricing but this particular ½ bottle is unique and when referenced from the wine list Corton Charlemagne grand cru burgundy is generally never below $150.00 per ½ bottle. The conversation with our sommelier lead us to believe that you were interested in white burgundy. We made a critical mistake by assuming and not presenting the wine list for you to see the actual choices and range of price. Our apologies. Please reach out to me directly to clear this up we would like to right the wrong and our sommelier team would very much like to earn your trust again.

This is a special place and one to which we could readily imagine returning. Its location is superb and there is a nurturing feel to the place - part staff, part style if the building - that makes you feel art home. It's an Inn, not a full blown hotel - no minibars, swimming pools or gyms. No elevator. The rooms are relatively small and our bathroom needed a radical makeover (shower and bath v difficult to get into and an amazingly loud extractor fund). We had a balcony which was great. The continental breakfast is dull (limited fruit, no toast) and the full breakfast menu not so exciting. The bar needs a makeover. The library is great and has a lovely fire. Coffee and pastries are served there for early risers.

Dear Jon13UK,

I am glad you enjoyed your stay at our little inn and could imagine returning! We are truly an escape from big city hotels being located on an island 30 miles out to sea. Our restaurant TOPPER’S is one of the highest rated restaurants on the island did you know that we also have a Grand Award from the wine spectator magazine. There are only 73 winners that have this designation and we have had ours for 17 years. We host over 1,500 unique wine selections. As a house guest you must have experienced our cheese and wine during the afternoon which is complimentary at no charge like our continental breakfast. We do recieve great feedback from our guests but always put customer service first. Please keep visiting our website for our current offerings and specials. We will look forward to your return!
