“"DO NOT DISTURB" Do not Stay.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2008

Well. Let me start out by saying we LOVED Nantucket. What a great little place to relax.

As for this particular B&B. Not so much.

Ill break this down by good and bads to keep it easy to read.

The Good:

Location is wonderful. Short walk from the dock.
Authentic Old House
Owner did small load of laundry for us (after asking to make sure it was small.)
Small guest refrigerator

The BAD:

Service (its non existent here. This is run more like a small and inpersonal hotel than a B&B. The owner has the feeling of "she cant wait to get away from talking to you". Not what we look for in a B&B.

Do not Disturb sign ignored. We travel with many valubles. When we returned to our room to find someone had been in it and made our bed when we had all of our personal items out ON the bed we were taken aback. This sign should be obeyed at all times, no matter where you stay.

Breakfast: Its continental, light continental. Left much to be desired but to their defense most B&Bs in Nantucket are this way.

Young boy that works at the inn, Heathers son I believe. We showed up to check in, he walked in, ignored us. Walked right by, outside, then back in. Still ignored us. Then finally Heather came out and greated us.

No Water, No Iced Tea, No snacks, No cookies. If your looking for any of this on a brisk afternoon so you can go sit outside and read and they wont be there. Sadly. This was very disappointing to us.

Bikes are there on the side of the house. We asked to use them but were denied. Heather said they belonged to guests. Upon closer inspection they had cob webs on them. So that story is unlikely.

Maintenance. This place needs some bug spray and a groundskeeper. You should not have to push bushes out of your way to get out to the back patio!

Amenities. There simply are none.

Overall I guess our thoughts on B&Bs is that we enjoy staying at them to get to meet people. This place does not encourage that and the entire time we would comment "why does this lady want to run a B&B if she does not want to be around us?

So that being said I cant leave this place a solidly good review or say we will ever return.

Advice for the owner: Take a trip and stay at some B&B's so you understand what they are about.

We strive to provide friendly, helpful service, to be responsive to all guest requests, and to respect our guests' privacy. We regret that this couple was not delighted with their stay, and wish they had let us know during the several times we spoke together during their two-day visit.

It is true that we do not rent bikes due to insurance and liability issues. Many guests either bring their own or rent from one of the many excellent bike rental companies on the island. We provide a bike rack where guests are welcome to lock their bikes, which is what we explain on our website and in person during check-in.

We do our best to provide opportunities for guests to mingle - our regular weekend wine and cheese parties are very popular, and conversation in the breakfast room is often lively! We tried offering lemonade and cookies but found that most people are away from the inn in the afternoons. Although we try to anticipate our guests' needs, we appreciate it when a guest lets us know if they would like something --afternoon tea, lemonade, early morning coffee--- we're always happy to oblige.

I was delighted with my stay at this lovely Nantucket B and B on North Water St. It was a short walk from the ferry, the front door is always open. My second floor room was small but suitable for one. It was charming and clean with an air conditioner, cable tv and free internet access.

I enjoyed talking with Heather the owner/innkeeper and I especially loved the fresh pastries, muffins, coffee cake and scones that she baked and served every morning at the inn's quaint continental breakfast room and outdoor garden.

Heather was always willing to point me in the right direction, make a reservation and recommendations.

It was the best part of my visit to Nantucket!

  • Liked — The continental breakfast.
  • Disliked — It was all pleasant, no dislikes.

Not a good experience in all aspects. Cob webs, falling wall paper, terrible breakfest, and not the cleanest. Six nights to long.
I will contact american express also.

Our goal at The Carlisle House Inn is to live up to very high standards of hospitality, cleanliness and value. We are sorry that this guest was unhappy, despite the additional personal services we provided, such as doing their personal laundry and providing extra evening snacks. The corner piece of wallpaper behind the bathroom door in the room they occupied came away from the wall due to unusual humidity; it has been fixed.
Our housekeeping staff works very hard to keep the inn spotless and to immediately address anything brought to our attention.

We serve a continental breakfast (all that we're licensed to serve) which always includes: home-baked breads, scones, muffins and/or coffee cakes; yogurt; hot and cold cereals; two kinds of juice; island-baked breads; bagels, english muffins and crumpets; fruit salads (with fresh berries, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, kiwi, peaches and other seasonal fruits); coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Most guests really enjoy the variety, the home-baked specialties and the excellent coffee.

We hope this review won't deter you from visiting our inn, where so many guests have enjoyed a wonderful stay and have said they plan to return!

We decided to go to Nantucket last minute for a quick get away and I checked out the hotel web site. It very accurately described the room and the availability chart was accurate as well.

The room we stayed in was a suite and was spacious and private. It was perfect and clean. The bed was comfortable, two tvs and good Air Conditioning. The bathroom was on the small side.

Heather and her staff were so helpful and allowed us to leave luggage early on arrival day. She even got us a reservation at a yummy restaurant.

I had read about the breakfast and it was yummy. There was "something natural" toasting bread and home baked blueberry bread, banana bread and fresh melon. The breakfast area is cozy, however you could eat in the garden as well.

We would highly recommend Carlisle House Inn, it is an easy walk from the high speed ferry.

  • Liked — We loved the location and quality of the room
  • Disliked — Nantucket is expensive, however this was a good value

With all kids in camp, my wife and I sought out an inexpensive, by Nantucket standards, quick get away. We found value in the Carlisle House. I did a lot of online research, including trip advisor, to find a place that accepted 2 nights midweek with all the charm of Nantucket and location convenience. I can say we found it and would recommend Carlisle House to anyone.

Heather, the Inn Keeper, was very good about responding back in email for my inquiries. I really liked her website to show room availability, price and pictures. Having a little backyard with bike rack was very important and not every place had one. The continental breakfast exceeded our expectations with the home bake goodies that accompanied the traditional cereals and juices. Heather was very nice and even dried off our ocean soaked towels. With pre-arrangements we left bags early on arrival and picked them up late upon departure. She also offers beach towels for day use.

For those using bikes, there is a bike path just up the street on the way to Dionis - beautiful beach. The path to Madakat was a biker's delight, though beach is washed away. Be sure to take Heather's recommendation to stop in on the Natural bakery. Grab one of the Young's bike map that Heather puts out as an excellent trail guide. I also recommend using the Nantucket chamber of commerce guide book for things to do like the whaling museum and cisco brewers (beer and wine tasting)

  • Liked — Nantucket charm along with value for the price
  • Disliked — window AC - a little noisy

The Carlisle House Inn was one of the few places that would accept a two-night reservation (most required 4 or more nights) and we had read ok things about it. The owner is nice and her children--mostly her teen daughter is friendly as well. The house has steep staircases that reach the various rooms, and we were on the third floor so that was tough to get to with our suitcases! Our room was small, the decor was minimal and a bit shabby, and the mattress definitely needed to be replaced. There was a wine and cheese hour on Friday and a continental breakfast in the mornings which was nice. The location is in walking distance to all the stores and restaurants of town, so overall this place is ok.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Carlisle House Inn this past weekend and we absolutely loved it! The innkeeper, Heather, was so friendly and accomodating. We felt like we were the only guests in the historic inn even though it was completely booked. The continental breakfast was SO great, not just the typical choices. Everything was fresh baked the morning of and the garden to eat in was so inviting. The unexpected wine and cheese happy hour on Saturday afternoon was great! Great selection of wine and Heather was very knowledgable on the choices. The humidity on the island was never felt in the rooms with the AC and the rooms were absolutely wonderful. If you make the trip to ACK, definitely stay at the Carlisle. It was terrific!!!
