I stumbled upon the quaint town of Ashfield while looking for a tree farm, and asked where I might get a quick sandwich. I was directed down the road to Country Pie. Immediately I changed my mind for one of their enticing selections of pizza.
I had the most expensive combo slices in the house, which was a huge meal in itself -- for $4.00. With a can of soda the bill was $4.78. The crust was perfect - not to thick, not too thin, and the ingredients were really fresh. Lots for carnivores and vegetarians to choose from. They also had a beef stew special, and a "breakfast casserole" for those seeking brunch.
It is a cozy, country-time place with worn wood floors and about 6 booths. Run by a family since the 1990s, and it is clearly a family place: there is a book shelf in the center of the room filled with games for children and adults. The staff was so friendly, and helped me with directions to get where I was going, because -- take note -- there is apparently no cell service in Ashfield. So don't rely on your GPS to get there.
But don't just take my word for it. On the bulletin board there was an autographed photo of Bill Cosby (who has a home in the valley nearby). It said, "Thanks, Country Pie!" That's what I'd call a celebrity endorsement!
For anyone who is visiting this very scenic part of Massachusetts -- whether foliage touring, hiking, fishing or skiing, it's worth a stop in this great little pizza place.
