The Barracks Cafe is hands down the best place for a bite to eat on Christmas Island. I have been here for a few months now and tried every food outlet around. None even come close to the very homely and relaxed atmosphere of Barracks.
The Barracks Cafe has a welcoming outdoor area with a well kept garden and sails overhead to protect you from the hot sun. Large square wooden tables enough to fit all your friends around and exotic tropical plants and stone sculptures surround the outdoor dining area. You can smell the sea breeze and the area is peaceful and relaxing.
Walking inside, you're greeted with the same chilled theme. There is a couch and a couple of armchairs with a bookshelves full of classic novels and island info. There's even a collection of recent glossy mags if that's more to your liking.
Looking up on the wall you'll see the menu scribed accross the room. The Barracks specialises in Burgers and Wraps for lunch, and also does a good breakkie! I recommend the eggs benedict with homemade hollandaise.
Trish and Don, the owners, are such lovely people and were very welcoming. Don used to be Harbour Master at the island amongst many other adventurous jobs. He is always the best person to ask about weather forecast for the island and he also has many tales of the island.
Trish, the other owner always greets people with a smile and is really passionate about offering good service and great food. Always willing to please.
So what do I recommend on the menu?
You can't go past the Governor's Burger! Beautiful spicy homemade patty with Trishes secret spices and chillies on a local made fresh bun. Top that with onion, tomato, lettuce and cheese. Add a little chilli sauce and yoghurt and you have a burger to die for! And they're filling!
I always opt for a chocolate milkshake to wash it down with. Trish makes an awesome ice cold milkshake and fills the old school metal cups to the brim.
I love the place so much that I go at least twice a week. Trish has also started Tuesday night pizza. Which is also a good feed and a great night out with friends. Vegetarian, spicy chicken and meat lovers.
I highly recommend this place.
Take a book, order a burger and drink... Then sit in the sun and read your book as the island time goes by.
