“Hands down, best cafe on the Island.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

The Barracks Cafe is hands down the best place for a bite to eat on Christmas Island. I have been here for a few months now and tried every food outlet around. None even come close to the very homely and relaxed atmosphere of Barracks.
The Barracks Cafe has a welcoming outdoor area with a well kept garden and sails overhead to protect you from the hot sun. Large square wooden tables enough to fit all your friends around and exotic tropical plants and stone sculptures surround the outdoor dining area. You can smell the sea breeze and the area is peaceful and relaxing.
Walking inside, you're greeted with the same chilled theme. There is a couch and a couple of armchairs with a bookshelves full of classic novels and island info. There's even a collection of recent glossy mags if that's more to your liking.
Looking up on the wall you'll see the menu scribed accross the room. The Barracks specialises in Burgers and Wraps for lunch, and also does a good breakkie! I recommend the eggs benedict with homemade hollandaise.
Trish and Don, the owners, are such lovely people and were very welcoming. Don used to be Harbour Master at the island amongst many other adventurous jobs. He is always the best person to ask about weather forecast for the island and he also has many tales of the island.
Trish, the other owner always greets people with a smile and is really passionate about offering good service and great food. Always willing to please.
So what do I recommend on the menu?
You can't go past the Governor's Burger! Beautiful spicy homemade patty with Trishes secret spices and chillies on a local made fresh bun. Top that with onion, tomato, lettuce and cheese. Add a little chilli sauce and yoghurt and you have a burger to die for! And they're filling!
I always opt for a chocolate milkshake to wash it down with. Trish makes an awesome ice cold milkshake and fills the old school metal cups to the brim.
I love the place so much that I go at least twice a week. Trish has also started Tuesday night pizza. Which is also a good feed and a great night out with friends. Vegetarian, spicy chicken and meat lovers.
I highly recommend this place.
Take a book, order a burger and drink... Then sit in the sun and read your book as the island time goes by.

“Good breakfasts.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

The breakfasts are good and the service efficient and friendly, but the coffee comes from a machine and tastes accordingly.

“Good food and great stories”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Like everything else on CI, The Barracks is not cheap. It is, however, great food well-cooked in a nice ambiance. If you don't want to sit outside there's an inside area which has comfy chairs and books and magazines to read. The lady of the house will add little extras to make your omelette or any one of the many burgers she makes just a bit special. The only drawabck is that although next to the ocean there is no view.
However, It's a popular place as the numerous clientelle bear witness.
Try the iced coffee or chocolate or the plethora of milkshakes

“Island life cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

I really liked everything about this place. The service is great, the food and drink yummy and the eating area was authentic and had island charm. Barracks Cafe made the best iced coffee I've ever had. It was also nice to see a couple of 'different' things on the menu like Hungarian pankcakes. You can eat on a table outside or indoors with a small book library and collection of brochures/leaflets to enjoy.

“The place for breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

Opening at 8.00 a.m., your first opportunity for purchasing some breakfast on Christmas Island.
Very adequate breakfast menu, and very helpful staff. Went there every day, and would go again.
