“Great B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2012

I visited Allen House with a group of friends for a recent college graduation. The house is wonderful. It is very historic with appropriate modern touches. Alan and Annie are great hosts. We had the run of the house and they went out of their way to ensure we had a good time. I highly recommend the Allen House if you are looking for a comfortable, historic B&B with a great host/hostess.

Room Tip: The Morris Room is very comfortable.

Amazing B&B. Great service, great people, great location and a beautiful place! When we arrived, we were greeted by the extremely friendly innkeeper, who went on to, after serving us home-made cookies with milk, into our room. The room was perfectly clean and the beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was in fine condition and all of the toiletries one would normally expect from a hotel were there, as well. Even though we only stayed on night, we got a great feeling as, whenever we went downstairs, or needed anything, the innkeeper was right there. He was very talkative, which was fine, and very helpful. In the morning, we had one of the most delicious breakfast's I've ever had. The eggs were delicious! I had to ask for the recipe. His wife was exceedingly friendly as well. Despite having recently recovered from breast cancer, she not only made breakfast and did all the cooking, but offered to drive my son and me to the college we were looking at! truly remarkable! Upon our return later that day, we were yet again greeted with cookies, milk and tea. we checked out with no problem and all was well. The innkeeper, before we left, gave us a few recommendations for restaurants to stop at in the area, and I must say, the two we tried were really delicious! Overall, I say five stars! What an amazing trip!

Room Tip: they all seem equally great, I would say

I visited the Allen House again this weekend. I have stayed there and at the Amherst Inn, owned by the same wonderful couple, several times through my time as a student and alum of nearby Amherst College. Both the Allen and House and the Amherst Inn provide a very convenient spot for exploring the town and surrounding areas (you can walk into Amherst center from both properties although the Amherst Inn is slightly closer). The owners are extremely friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is a bit more special than you would expect. For Easter Sunday, we were treated to a delicious, springy eggs benedict. The decor is certainly over-the-top Victorian but the rooms are extremely comfortable, especially the cozy beds. There is nothing you will miss here!

Room Tip: If you want to be closer to Amherst center, I would choose to stay at the Amherst Inn, owned by the...

My husband and I had booked a reservation very last minute and quite late, but felt extremely welcomed when we arrived. We were given a very nice room with beautiful views of Emily Dickinsons family home. The housekeeper was very helpful about giving us local directions and advice on where to get good food late. The room itself was absolutely beautiful. It had plenty of space and a very large soft bed. The room was called the "turret" because it had stunning window views from every angle. We had a private bathroom which was very clean. The breakfast was homemade and delicious. This B&B is by far the best getaway in Western Mass.

Room Tip: Any room they have is stunning.

Our extended family took over the inn for a three-day weekand on the occasion of a birthday celebration, and we were very pleased. We had all six rooms. The decor is authentically Victorian (it's won several notable awards) and is nothing if not fully executed, from the spectacular stuffed peacock over the mantelpiece to the intensely detailed wallpaper in every room to the Victorian knick-knacks in every corner. Inkeepers Alan and Ann were consistently attentative but not intrusive. Alan prepared wonderful breakfasts. It was too cold to do much walking this January weekend, but downtown Amherst is within an easy uphill stroll. There was plenty of heat, and for those wholike their sleeping quarters cool, the beds were piled high with quilts and comforters. During the interludes when the whole gang was present, we took over the front parlor for conversation, games, and a little football watching, while some used the free wi-fi to check up on email or work. The bathrooms are modest but serviceable. All in all, it was very congenial and we had a fine weekend.

This was one of our first bed and breakfast experiences. We stayed for one night during a brief overnight visit to the area, but we couldn't have asked for anything more for our stay. The house is beautifully preserved and decorated in Victorian style, but has all of the modern amenities you would want, including comfortable beds, pillows, plenty of heat and hot water (much appreciated during the cold December night we stayed), free wi-fi access, and even an iPod dock in each room. The breakfast was very good, and the service was accommodating and super friendly. This was a great experience in a great area, with an extra touch of hominess added by Panda, the friendly house cat!

The Inn is beautiful. The breakfast was unusually good, particularly the sausages. Wish I could find them somewhere.
