“Could scarcely be better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2009

I spent five nights here while working at a UMass research center, and it could scarcely have been better. The renovated hotel is airy and spotless, the room was large and comfortable, with free internet and an excellent desk chair (useful for an arthritic!), the staff were extremely helpful. There is free parking in the Center garage, and complimentary breakfast (very simple: bagels, croissants, donuts, muffins, danish, and yoghurt) in the lobby café. The mattresses are an odd kind of foam, but to my surprise one sleeps very well on them. My only criticism concerns the pillows: fiercely anti-allergenic no doubt, but also the kind that fight back when you dig your head into them.
The price was more than reasonable: $104 per night, as against $119 in the rather dingy University Lodge.
This would be a good place to stay for any university person, but it might even be a good jumping-off point for excursions around the lovely Five College area.

I just stayed at the Campus Center Hotel for a conference last week and what a find! All the rooms have just been renovated and the service was terrific.

On arriving in Amherst, it took us a good half hour to find the hotel. There was no signage as we approached to confirm where the hotel was located, and our GPS indicated we had arrived half a mile down the road. You actually have to enter through the student union on the UMass campus. Free parking (validated at reception) is available in a garage about 100 yards away.
The hotel rooms have just been renovated and are clean and comfortable. My teenaged daughter especially appreciated the I-Pod home and charging unit. The hallways are long and institutional, and I guess the renovations are ongoing, because workmen started pounding on the walls at 7:30 am.

I stayed at the campus center hotel this past weekend. I wasn't expecting much in terms of luxury. After seeing the signs on check-in that a major renovation was under way this fall, I had a feeling that the rooms were a bit lackluster. For an event or visit to the campus, the location is perfect. But the room itself had a 25 year old mattress and was essentially a glorified king size cot. The ceiling and walls are made of cement, so there is a prison like feel. The bathroom is completely outdated and perhaps hadn't been renovated in 25+ years. Wired internet for free exists in the room, which is always a nice perk, but the wireless access is reserved for students and faculty. Perhaps the $117 a night was a bit pricey for the accomodations and ammenities. When their renovations are complete, I am sure I'd pay $117 given the location, but in all fairness, this is a campus, not a 5 star hotel.

The check in staff were very nice and the free continental breakfast was decent.

The building is a 1970s-looking scary Stalinist-style monolith across one end of the beautiful Amherst campus. So on the one hand it dominates the site in quite an alarming way, and on the other hand it has great views of everywhere else! I was very comfortable in my room despite its quite harsh lines: you can get cosy even surrounded by concrete, it seems. Breakfast was OK rather than exciting, the place was clean and efficiently run, and the staff were delightful and very helpful. I would certainly stay here again if I were lucky enough to be in the nice town and campus of Amherst again one day.

  • Liked — The view and the very nice staff
  • Disliked — The architecture of the hotel itself

It was a pleasant stay. First time visitors bringing our son to look at the school. The desk staff was very helpful with suggestions concerning the school and the area. The hotel is a teaching hotel, so the staff is majority students. The location indoor parking, high speed internet and the breakfast make this great value. The campus tours leave from the second floor of the building daily. The rooms are somewhat outdate, there is some new furniture in the room.

Pretty disappointing place. Dirty bathroom, cement rooms, unfriendly lady at the desk. This place needs a lot of work. Very hard to find - in campus student union. Not a bad breakfast. Cheap.
